This movement is taken from the first concert of John Eliot Gardiner's Brahms cycle with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra which sets out to contextualize the composer's symphonies by performing them alongside other key works in his output and allowing them to receive the attention they deserve.

Started in 2021, the cycle of concerts sees the distinguished conductor join forces with one of the world's most tradition-steeped orchestras to present the four symphonies alongside choral works, as well as the composer's two piano concertos.

Filmed in May 2022, this second concert in the series sees the British conductor pair the sunny Second Symphony in D major with the turbulent First Piano Concerto in D minor in performances also informed by his decades-long work as a pioneer of the period-performance movement. He and the orchestra are joined in the concerto, one of the most technically challenging in the repertoire, by multi-award-winning pianist Stephen Hough.
