Theo
I'm pretty sure the guy on the ground isn't the squad leader
because he doesn't sit in the passenger seat later on
and what SL isn't going to call shotgun
There are another 8 men on the ground doing dismounted fire and movement
Going from left to right
there's a machine gunner on the extreme left flank with a Type 80
a Chinese copy of the PKM medium machine gun
To his right at the start is an RPG-7 Grenadier without a rifle
In multiple videos I've seen of the Malian Army
their RPG guys have not been carrying a rifle
which was more common under Cold War Eastern Bloc doctrine
The RPG guy seems to stay back in cover
while the rest of the squad does a bounding drill down the lane
Whether that's because that's an actual tactic
or because the drill is focusing on rifle marksmanship
and he doesn't have a rifle so he just hangs back
it's unclear
The other 6 appear to be split into a Bravo team on the left
and Alpha team on the right
We can tell that they're Alpha and Bravo
because when they're doing their bounding drill
you can hear them giving call-outs
Bravo moves
Bravo supports
Alpha moves
Alpha supports
and repeating that down the line like in Western militaries
Thanks to my designated French guy for helping me out with the French
Now, Trinomes are how the French currently split up their squads
although there are differences with how these Malians are doing it
Whether a Trinome is the result of French influence
it's hard to say
It's also unclear if the Machine Gun and RPG guy are under Bravo
which would be the French method
But the RPG guy doesn't follow Bravo at all
and the Machine Gunner is on a different rhythm with his bounds as well
not connected to the Rifleman
Based on who sits in the passenger seat of the Technical
it seems that the leftmost member of the Alpha team is the Squad Leader
The guys in the Trinomes are all armed with rifles
My buddy Safar Publishing believes that they mostly look like Chinese Type 56s
Both the version with a fixed wooden stock and folding bayonet
and the version with an under-folding stock, stamped receiver and no bayonet
Some guys have even fashioned makeshift foregrips
which they seem to be using with an old-fashioned broomstick sort of grip
Now that you've got the squad, here's Theo to talk about the tactics
Right y'all, Theo from Common Arms Channel here
So, super excited to be featured on this battle order video
I've been a big fan of the channel for a while
So we are going to be looking at the Mali armed forces
Specifically we are going to be looking at one of their drills
It's basically them going to the range and practicing a squad assault
So I've already kind of looked at this clip a couple times
And I have a lot of things to comment on
Specifically about the formation, the movements, the employment of certain weapon systems
And then I have some kind of smaller details on the gear itself
But let's move a little bit more specifically into the actual drill that they're conducting here
Again, it's kind of like a squad assault
And there's definitely some similarities that you'll see with like Western militaries
But some pretty nuanced differences that I've kind of picked out already
Okay, so the amount of people is going to be different from like the US Army and the US Marine Corps
Again, just kind of talking about my infantry background there
Okay, so kind of right off the bat
So movements, again, I'm not going to kind of base it off of this
You have some people with their weapons up, some down
That's just because some people are...
You're kind of gaming the game
You understand there's going to be targets presenting themselves
So you just have some people that are getting a little bit more excited than the others
As far as putting their weapons up
I mean, if it was me and I was that close
I'd probably start putting my weapon up as well
So to kind of frame the training here
We're going to be seeing a few different things
So we're going to be seeing them actually training with their bounding
So as far as them moving up in pairs or even in teams moving up to the objective
We're going to see their actual marksmanship drills
Because we have actual targets out there
And it looks like they're paper targets
So I imagine they're kind of generally assessing their marksmanship
And then we also have some break contact drills towards the end
And then we have a few different weapon systems that are being employed throughout
But just kind of framing it right here
You have kind of like this last covered and concealed position
And then from here, that is when again, you can kind of see here
It's pretty open
That's when they're going to have to start moving more
Into those buddy pairs bounding across
Covering each other while they're moving up closer to the objective
So they're not just moving up without cover kind of thing
So the guys who are outside of cover are down
Which is good
Because they don't have a whole lot of cover themselves
Besides those barrels
Okay, so we have the employment of an RPG
So RPG generally kind of like anti-tank weapons
RPG can be anti-personnel as well, of course
But generally anti-tank weapons
You'll definitely see those organic inside of a line squad
But here we have them employing it
And this is pretty common
If you're moving on to the objective
It's nice to be able to hit it with a weapon like that
Because then you can kind of exploit that
Especially if they weren't necessarily engaging you at that point
If you can hit them with the surprise
And hit them with the surprise of a very violent weapon system
Kind of similar mindset when you're conducting an ambush
If you hit them with that claymore
And then you start hitting them with the machine gun
And everything else
It just creates a lot more shock and awe
So initiating it kind of with that RPG
Is a great kind of move
Now I'm not going to be too nitpicky
But you will see he's out of cover for about 10 seconds
And once that person
You want to try and prepare that weapon system
Like the RPG, AT4, LAW
You want to prepare it while you're behind cover
Of course you want to identify your targets
And understand where that's at
But then you want to prep it behind cover
And then once you move out of cover
You basically want to be moving out of cover
Get your sights and then fire it
Just so you're not exposed for any longer
Than you need to be
Because you will see some people
Who will pop out of cover with an RPG
And because they're taking too long
They'll actually end up getting shot
So generally speaking
Once this happens
You want to be as quick as possible
And these guys should be picking up their fire
As much as possible
And then generally kind of preface that
By saying, hey, prep and rocket
And then people will pick up their rate of fire
Just to fix the enemy in place
So you can really employ that
You can see here he's out of cover
Ends up getting the RPG off
So you have effects
At this point you want to be
Exploiting that right away
So you want people bounding up right away
While they're kind of stunned
And trying to react to that
Now this is also a different thing
Having a technical
Acting as like a support by fire
So generally if you have a maneuver element
You have a support by fire
Which is like a machine gun
Which you basically be suppressing the enemy
Again, just to kind of fix them a little bit better
So the maneuver element
Can kind of bound up onto them
So having a technical is great
Generally speaking
If you have a technical
It's nice to be able to
Exploit the maneuverability of it
But you can kind of see here
They kind of have like a narrow lane
And that might not necessarily
Be the focus right now
So they're kind of just using it
As a support by fire
Just trying to get everybody in play
And there's nothing wrong with that
Okay, so now we start seeing
The movement of them actually bounding up
So moving and shooting totally fine
And if you're comfortable with your ability
To actually shoot and move
And again, just not trying to be too nitpicky
But you do have people
Using the barrels as cover
Which is great
That's something that I struggled a lot
As a leader to get
The junior marines and soldiers to understand
You have cover
Make sure you utilize that
Or you know, you might be bounding
It doesn't make any sense to bound
You know, three meters short of a tree
If you can just, you know
Spend that extra half a second
To get to that tree
And be a lot safer
In that kind of duration
So they are using the barrels
Which is great
They're not necessarily using to their advantage
You know, if you're a right-handed shooter
Generally speaking, it's easier and better
To kind of fire on the right side of it
Just so you're having less of yourself exposed
But then using the barrels as cover is great
So we can kind of see here
They're moving up
It looks like almost in buddy pairs
You can do this in teams
One team can kind of fire
While the other team bounds up
Or you can just have like two people
One covering the other while they move
Okay, so that's kind of what we're seeing here
Again, we can kind of see there's targets now
So I imagine at this point
They're also kind of testing
Their marksmanship abilities
So now it looks like they're bounding in teams
So we have the left side holding
And the right side is firing
And then they can
Looks like they're consolidating here
So generally speaking
When you get really close to the objective
Especially when there's no cover
You can kind of see here
You don't want to just stop short
Because at this point
You've probably killed everybody
That you're going to kill at that point
Until you actually get in the objective
But you don't want to be stopping short
Especially out in the open
So once you get really close
That's when you're kind of just really walking
And shooting anything that kind of presents itself
At that point
Because you want all weapons
Especially in that point
It's very crucial
Because it's such short distance
It's very easy to get a casualty in the squad
If somebody's just popping out and shooting
So once you get that close
Generally, we call it assaulting through
So everybody will pretty much get on line
And assault all the way to the objective
Either scanning or engaging
If you actually have targets visible
So again, it looks like
They're kind of practicing more
Of the marksmanship skills there
So they stop here
I'm not sure if they just had like
A certain limit of advance
That they weren't supposed to cross
Don't walk past the targets
Because you're not going to be shooting anything
That kind of makes sense
That might be simulating that
The actual objective
Was kind of before the actual targets
So they're not going to actually
Walk past the targets
They're just going to kind of walk up
To where the targets are
And that's kind of where the objective is
So I'm not going to go too heavy into that
Now this is an interesting one though
So you have their machine gunner
Who's also acting as
Kind of like another support by fire
Having two support by fires on both sides
Is okay
But it gets very very
Sketchy
Once you have people bounding up
Especially when they bound up
This far forward
So you can kind of see here
That's a pretty significant distance
So this machine gunner's sector of fire
Because this guy's right here
He's not going to shoot to the right of him
Because there's more people
His sector of fire
Is very very narrow
So what he could do
Is actually displace
So just move up
A little bit closer
Maybe like right over here
And then his sector of fire
Opens up significantly
He can pretty much engage that entire line
But because he kind of stayed all the way back here
His sector of fire shrinks more and more
As that maneuver element moves up
So generally speaking
That's why you'll have a machine gun team
Kind of displaced
As the maneuver element is moving up
Just so they can maintain effects longer
And this dude needs to do longer bursts
It kills me
I don't know how they're doing
If they're hurting on ammo
But homie
So now we see them bounding back
So this is kind of like a break contact drill
So basically you're assaulting an objective
And you're like
Oh actually
Either they got reinforcements
Or their numbers are just more superior than you thought
Or they're more formidable than you thought
Especially if you start taking casualties
But if you're losing that fire superiority
And they're sending more rounds down right towards you
Than you are to them
That's when you might want to break contact
For recon elements
Break contact is very common
Just because you're not really that units
That's set up well to engage
That's not really your mission
So breaking contact is something
That a lot of people will practice
But for conventional infantry
It's good to know as well
So you can see there
They're kind of bounding back
Again, you can bound back in buddy pairs
Or you can bound back in teams
So you don't want just everybody running back
Because then everybody's just going to get shot in the back
So it's kind of like a tactical withdrawal
If you will
So they're going to do that to the point
Where they get basically online with the vehicle
So once they get online with that vehicle
Then you'll notice
And they're doing a good job using the cover still
Except not necessarily on the right side
But they're using a good job at that still
Now once they get online
They're going to sort of peel the formation
Towards the vehicle to get out of there
And you'll kind of see that here
So machine gun
Still kind of
Both machine gunners need to just kind of
Do some longer bursts
It's killing me
Okay, so now you'll see that they're peeling
So this is great
So you have all
Pretty much the entire squad
Is suppressing the enemy
While these guys peel away
Because again, you still don't want
The entire formation to get up
And run sideways
Because then you're just going to be like
You know a moving
Kind of pop up target for the enemy
So they're suppressing
While everybody just kind of peels
They get to the end of the formation
And then once you get to the certain point
Like if the vehicle is behind cover
Then you don't need to keep like getting down
You can just start peeling people onto that vehicle
Which is not something we practice
Again, we don't generally
If you're light infantry
You're light infantry
Practicing it with
You have like a technical
And you're kind of egressing like this
Is an interesting one for me
Of course generally speaking
That machine gunner
If he can work
Then make sure he's working
To kind of provide some security
For those guys
As they're getting onto the vehicle
Because again
You never want to drop that security
Because then that's when
The enemy could exploit that
And you know
Shoot their own RPG at you
Now it should be noted
Again, we kind of saw it in the beginning
Where it was kind of
Almost like an urban looking environment
Where you have these
Containers here
If it is kind of like an urban environment
And you do actually have the cover
Of like these
Connexes
Or these containers
Of course
You can kind of use that
And have obscuration
For your entire element
Or concealment
As you're moving up
So you wouldn't need to necessarily
Go through this giant open field
If you can just
Walk on the other side of the containers
Where the enemy doesn't even see you
Of course that can be like a tree line
Or something
So if you have terrain like that
That can actually conceal your element
And provide cover of course
That's definitely preferred as well
If you can do that
Then of course
You want to maneuver
Using the terrain
But if you don't have a choice
You kind of have
Stuff like this happening
You know kind of like the battle of Bellwood
Where you have people
Just kind of bounding through the open
And again the bounding is kind of
Just what you need to do
And you'll kind of see it
In certain movies as well
Where it's kind of just out of necessity
But of course the safest way
Is to just have people covering
While people are moving up
And you're just kind of taking turns
But you need to be kind of strategic
In how you're doing that
Moving to cover
Or of course
You don't want to be picking up
And making these very long sprints
Because then you're just
Moving too far
You're closing off your buddy sector of fire
And then it just makes you a target
For the enemy for longer
So overall it's nothing crazy
And again this is very akin to
Kind of what you would see with
Western tactics
This is very similar to what
I've done in the Marine Corps and the Army
More specifically the Marine Corps infantry
Because for whatever reason
They like to just bound through the open
They're like oh there's an open field
Let's bound across that
As opposed to just using
The terrain
I feel like I did that a lot more in the Army
But of course this is
Definitely akin to what you would see
When it comes to like Western tactics
As far as that movement
As far as the communication
That they're trying to use
And then also the
Break contact as well
Now of course real quick you guys know
I love looking at gear
So for the most part
There's definitely
In the military
The US military specifically
You'll have kind of this big focus on uniformity
Everything needs to look the same
Because it conveys discipline
Which you know there's a certain point to that
You can kind of train people the same
Because you know what gear they're working with
However we can see
There's definitely some discrepancies
As far as the uniformity
You have different plate carriers
You have some people that have magazine pouches
Some that don't
So this dude's going to have a hard time
Kind of reloading
You have some hats on your helmets
You have some that don't have that
You kind of just have different
Helmets in general
And when it comes to Mali
They've had their military equipment
Supplied by multiple countries
Like Russia and China specifically
Are some examples
You'll have differences
In the weapons themselves
As far as like the AKs
With the kind of para stocks
And some with the full stocks
So it is what it is
You're not really going to harp on
Uniformity too much
Especially for a military
That's you know
They'll if they can get certain equipment
Then they're going to get that equipment
They don't necessarily have the luxury
Of focusing on things like uniformity
But like not having a chin strap or something
Or people who don't buckle the chin strap
Or kind of just tuck it underneath the helmet
That's going to be rough
Because I will say like
Once you get into the prone the first time
Either your helmet is going to fall off
Or you're going to kind of do this
It's going to hit the body armor
And then you're not going to be able to see anything
So yeah
There's some things that they'll definitely learn
As they're training
Kind of you know
What doesn't work well
With the specific gear that they have
But again it is what it is
They're just trying to make do it seems
This dude looks like
He's straight out of Call of Duty 4
He's got the hard knuckle gloves
He's got the dark eyebrow
With the goggles on the helmets
He's got like some tape or paracord
Or something around the stock too
Yeah he looks
He looks pretty squared away
He looks like a hard target
So if you have someone
Who looks like their tactical expertise
Is kind of like down here
Like their gear is all over the place
Their helmet's not buckled in
It's like crooked
Everything just kind of looks loose
And kind of just all over the place
It seems like you know
They might not necessarily have
Their stuff together
As well as a person that looks
All tight and squared away
They have all their gear
In like a sensible way
But of course with other militaries
Where they have a bunch of different equipment
Coming from all these different areas
You can't necessarily
Use that as a good judgment
Of who might be a little bit more
Squared away
Or tactically proficient than the other person
But again very happy to be featured on the channel
And hopefully I didn't yap too much
D.O. out
Thanks D.O.
