Well, when Alexandra Ayala and Anouk Kouvermans ran for the shelter of the indoors at
Nesette 4-2 and Love 30 yesterday, I don't think they would have thought that that would be it for the day.
The top seed against the world number 182. They were the first match on yesterday.
And there is the break back. Ayala with head and shoulders up.
She's had a lot of encouragement of late as a wildcard to make the semifinals of the WTA Masters 1000 in Miami.
Ayala's work ethic and competitive energy serves her incredibly well, knowing that she was going to get broken on occasion.
And she's maintained really high spirits in the face of that, the top seed.
Stepping up to finish off when the opportunity is on the table. Using the backhand to open up the court.
Skids off the baseline. Look, the rain delays are a huge story in this match.
And it does seem a step more difficult for Kouvermans to pick up where she left off yesterday.
She'd worked her way into the match. She'd got a feel for Ayala's ball.
She had a clarity about what she needed to do. And she's down a set here.
So even at a break up in the second, any slow start was going to be penalized.
You know what I want to do on the court. Also got a lot fitter.
So when she's up against players of the makeup of Ayala, who's a very good counterpuncher, can make a lot of balls.
She can back herself in those rallies, trust her physicality and her fitness.
She's ready to shake hands, Ayala.
It's just got to be true to how she's contested the vast majority of this match and try not to rush it.
She has struggled at moments on serve.
Now it's really smart using the lob.
Not only has Kouvermans pushed back there, but has to generate all her own pace on the forehand side,
which she has cracked when it's been out in front of her, the ball.
It's the first victory as a top 100 player for Alexandra Ayala.
Showed her competitive spirit yesterday.
The winner of this UERA Julius Open, Alexandra Ayala.
