Home is a Journey Ep 7 - Heatherbell
"Heatherbell," a timeless 1920s Federation cottage, underwent a graceful transformation 8 years ago, fusing vintage charm with modern elements seamlessly. This exceptional home, a testament to the design expertise of Steve Gliosca and Urbane Projects, strikes a perfect balance between historical allure and contemporary style, recently setting a sales record in the Subiaco suburb.
Retaining many period details, such as a tuckpointed Federation facade, timber gables, sash windows, corbelled chimney and a wraparound veranda, the home was a testament to its era. Heatherbell, named by its original owners after their hometown of North Lanarkshire in Scotland, comprised three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a sleepout, kitchen and dining area, but needed more space and modern amenities for a growing family.
This episode of “Home is a Journey,” highlights the challenge of updating a 1920s cottage while preserving its historical integrity and meeting council rules, especially concerning garage placement. Creative solutions, like burying the garage underground to keep the street view intact, were key. Despite the complexities, the project resulted in a stunning family residence that harmoniously blends historical charm with modern functionality.
