For more than a decade, Xi Jinping has methodically placed his loyal allies within the Chinese military,
while he has dismissed over 200 generals who have not been loyal to him.
Another of Xi's ambitions is to take control of the self-governing democratic Taiwan, which the CCP has never ruled.
USA's intelligence service believes that Xi has set a deadline for the invasion by 2027.
However, something seems to have gone wrong since last summer.
A number of key figures that Xi has appointed to lead the invasion of Taiwan have disappeared from the public,
or have been removed from their positions.
At a closer look, Huawei Dong, the third highest-ranking Chinese military,
has not been seen in public for almost a month.
The US intelligence service and the Pentagon have told The Washington Times
that he could be the latest victim of Beijing's purges.
Another admiral from Xi's faction, Miao Hua, is under investigation for breaking the party's guidelines.
Miao earlier helped Xi to mobilize many officials within the Chinese military.
Insider sources say that almost a dozen highly-raised Chinese military,
which is considered to be Xi's closest colleague, are under investigation or have been arrested.
The NTD cannot independently verify these information, due to Beijing's lack of openness
and its control over the flow of information from China.
But one thing can be stated, that these people have not been seen in public for a long time.
Heng He is a China expert and has devoted more than three decades to studying the country's political development.
He has also been an expert witness to both the US Congress and the European Parliament.
So that scenario seems unlikely.
However, such purges would still need his approval.
Which means, if this is being forced on him, then the opposing forces must have grown so powerful
that he can no longer resist them.
So, in my view, it's clear that Xi Jinping's power is now facing significant constraints.
Tang Jingyuan, who has been an analyst for NTD's Chinese news agency for several years,
also suspects that the purges are aimed at Xi's colleagues of an opposition force within the party,
not at Xi himself.
Among those who have been reported to have been purged,
there is the commander of the Eastern Theater Command and the commander of the missile forces,
both key people at a possible invasion of Taiwan.
Given this situation, it can only suggest that this is a sweeping purge and act of retaliation
orchestrated by his political rivals, directly targeting Xi Jinping.
Insider sources from Beijing's political circles state that the resistance within the Communist Party
has been spared due to China's slow economy and record-breaking geopolitical tensions.
