Synopsis:
In March 1866, the brothers Johann, Josef, and Eduard Strauss traveled to the twin cities of Pest and Buda on the two banks of the Danube (which was only united to form Budapest in 1872) to give joint concerts for charitable purposes at the Redoute. On this occasion, on March 16, Johann Strauss II presented for the first time a new, fast-paced polka entitled "Éljen a Magyàr!", which he dedicated "To the noble Hungarian nation." In this composition, the composer not only paid homage to his hosts with the title ("Long live the Hungarian!") and the dedication, but also included a quotation from the "Rakoczi March" at the end of the fast-paced work, which had long played the same role in Hungary as his father's "Radetzky March," Op. 228, later played in Austria. That was certainly a bold move at the time—but Strauss didn't worry too much about it.

Text: Prof. Franz Mailer
