Balvaird Castle is fine example of a medieval Scottish Tower house. Located on the border of Perth and Kinross and Fife, in Scotland, it is well worth a visit. It was built in the late 1400's and occupied between 1500 and 1658 by the aristocratic Murray family.
Travelling south from Perth, take junction 9 on the M90 and then the A912 towards Glenfarg.
Balved Castle is open all year and is free to enter. There is a small car park that is open
in the summer months. It is a five minute walk up from the car park. It is moderately steep
but offers great views at the top. The castle is a fine example of a traditional late medieval
Scottish tower house. Built in the late 1400s by the Murray family, they lived there from around
1500 to 1658. In more recent times it was known to have been accommodation for farm workers.
A tower house or castle is built for defensive purposes as well as habitation.
They are typically found in hilly or mountainous areas. This allows its occupants to command and
defend strategic points with fewer resources.
