the container shop is a new project
focused on building a functional storage
and workshop area on our property while
we continue to work on our Hyper Adobe
roundhouse Long-term the plan is to set
up multiple shipping containers
surrounding a clean level surface and
eventually put a roof over the whole
thing to shade the workspace and catch
rain water In the last video we prepped
the area poured a concrete pad and set
our first 20ft container And today we'll
be making some major modifications to it
for storage and something really fun
Here we are with the next phase of this
area Our main focus is we need to go to
our storage unit in town Get all of our
boxes and things that we want to store
in here Get shelving and organize it all
It's actually really clean The floor is
in great shape It's a one trip container
I believe it's cargo worthy Way better
built than the container that we got um
for the goat barn So I'm very excited
about the possibilities that we can do
with this We're definitely not going to
need the whole thing for storage We will
see what we come up with but first
organize
Okay so we have all the boxes moved over
to our storage container So we're going
to go back to our storage unit in town
get all the truck loaded up with things
that I just need to donate to Goodwill
and be done with and not think about
anymore And then we're going to pick up
the shelving and get organized Well I
totally forgot to record We had the
truck filled up with all of the stuff
that needed to go to Goodwill dropped it
off and look what we grabbed We have two
shelving units So we are going to go put
those together and hopefully start
organizing well to start So we have our
two uh racks in there and tomorrow we're
going to start going through all of our
crap and see what we can get rid of and
what we want to keep It's most of us
crap So
anyway going to become minimalists again
Maybe not but anyway we'll see you
tomorrow
Good morning It's just after 7 We've
already got laundry going Dogs have been
out for an hour So next up we are going
to make a little bit of breakfast and
then we're going to work on that storage
container Okay we have finally made it
to the container this morning So much
going on But we have totes that we just
need to start going through see what we
can get rid of Let's see how big of a
pile is our donate pile I think it's
going to be huge
It's almost clean We only have a few
more things Yeah Getting it now Forgot
to bring your trash bag Uh-oh
I had it Maybe I put it in the truck
Hold on I can't remember
This will have to do I don't know why
it's wet
though All right here it is I still need
to get a few more storage containers
just so things aren't
out But that's it Those are going to a
new home
soon That needs to go in the garage We
did it Only took three days but I'm so
glad that that is behind us We don't
have to think about it anymore And uh we
can get on to more important things like
building our house Now one thing I am
ashamed to say it took me this many
years to figure out don't write on the
boxes Use some tape cuz things are going
to change You're going to need to change
it and then you're marking out on the
box and it's really annoying Just use
some painters tape and a marker and your
life will be so much easier
Little things make a big difference
Good morning Hey we are back at the
brand new storage container Yes Uh
you've already done a bunch of work
getting everything out of our storage
container that was in town It's all in
here It's organized Amazing Yeah However
we've been keeping a little secret We're
not just going to leave it like this
Nope Guys this is the next phase of the
project We're turning it into a place
for Hayden to stay He'll be here in 6
days and we have no place for him to
sleep Also Jet is going to be 18 this
year and he wants a little more privacy
That will come on down the road But for
now we just need to convert this
container and make it into a place for
Hayden to stay Before we can do anything
on this container we need to level it
It's just the slightest bit unlevel Just
barely We were so close Yeah So we're
borrowing a farm jack from a friend Just
going to lift it up and get it level
Shouldn't take too long
Okay next up fun stuff We need to decide
where the windows are going and where
the door is going We have a general idea
We just need to measure and make sure
it's
correct Okay Okay
So we're triple checking the size of
these uh frames that we need to build
We're getting really confused because
the rough opening of the window is 24x
36 but we measured this and it's
actually 20 5x 37 It's an inch bigger
And we realized that when we installed
these we actually installed them
backwards if that makes sense Like so
this the 2-in tubing that we've got
we've got to make it an inch bigger
because we're installing the window
backward It'll make more sense when we
get to install it But I'm glad we double
check cuz otherwise we would have made
all of our frames the wrong
size trying to get me down
Then I get
on into the sea I
drown and it won't shut me up
What's up How's it going I really wish
my dad was here to do all of this I know
the Okay so the only issue is we're
doing things differently of course So
you can't use the window rough opening
as your guide because we're putting the
window in backwards Yeah I talked about
that earlier So we got the measurements
Finally Johnson figured it out And And I
I don't mind doing the work I don't like
measuring So now that the window is done
let's go ahead and start figuring out
where the door is going to go and making
sure the size is right I added 4 in to
the width and 2 in to the top The reason
we're not adding 2 in to the bottom is
because we're not insulating and putting
so floor down where this exterior door
is It's kind of complicated It all makes
sense later on
but we need to measure this and get it
right What are you doing in here She's
hurt her foot and she needs some
attention Oh what's wrong I don't know
what's wrong You do She just needs lots
of hugs And they won't shut me
up Now they tell me I'm dumb And I've
had enough fun just running around cuz I
feel like I carry a gun on the tip of my
tongue But now I'm done No I won't stop
for a minute Got to hit the road Got to
get me off the limit No I won't stop
till I get it See I'm like a home Ask me
how I did it I did it like that I did it
like that
packing envelope to make them work Is
that how you're supposed to do it Yeah I
mean I guess it works Packing envelopes
make the best
level Straight
line I mean look at it It's straight
Today's video is sponsored by our
friends at Jackary We're going to use
their solar generator 5000 plus to grind
cut and weld all these windows and doors
into the storage container But first
let's take a look at some of the details
of this
unit The 5000 Plus is focused on whole
home reliable high-capacity backup power
for emergencies and eco-friendly living
Each unit has 5 kilwatt hours of lithium
iron phosphate storage expandable all
the way up to 30 kilwatt hours You can
run it at 120 volts or 240 volts and it
surges up to 7,200 watts Also join two
units together to get up to 60 kwatt
hours of storage and
14,400 W of surge power It's 16 and 12
inches wide 15 and a half inches deep
and 25 inches high and 132 pounds which
means the wheels and handle are very
much appreciated Of course you can use
the Jackary app to set up and control It
is a 5-year warranty upgradeable to a
7-year warranty On the output side
you've got four 20 amp 2400 watt AC
plugs two USBC 100 watt plugs two USBA
18 watt plugs a 12vt 10 amp cigarette
lighter adapter two 30 amp ports a Nema
L1430R and a 1450 both of which can
surge up to 7200 watts and an AC
expansion port for the transfer switch
On the input side it has high voltage PV
connectors so you can build your own
solar array plug straight in with MC4
connectors or you can use something
portable like the Solar Saga 500X They
are bfacial panels They fold up
accordion style so you can store them
easily They're rated for the outdoors
and you can even chain them together to
make bigger arrays if you want to
There's of course an AC connector that
you can plug into any standard household
plug and charge it up that way and a DC
expansion port for adding additional
battery packs Speaking of battery packs
yes the unit does come with 5 kwatt
hours of storage built in but you can
add five additional 5 kWh battery packs
for up to 30 kwatt hours That is huge
That's basically as big as the system
inside our solar shed They plug into
each other with special cables that are
even labeled so you can't plug them in
the wrong way And of course the system
already has a BMS and internal
protections built in so you don't have
to worry about it Speaking of not
worrying the Jackary 5000 Plus can also
function as an essential home backup
solution keeping your core devices
running during storms and emergencies
with seamless UPS solar charging and
sustainable power for a greener future I
am so looking forward to putting the
5000 Plus to the test working on this
container project Right now Jackary has
huge discounts and bundles on the 5,000
Plus so use the links in our description
to go get yours All right let's do this
All right the door has been marked That
means that we are ready to get all the 2
by 2 uh square tubing out of the truck
get it cleaned up We could maybe start
marking it today Look at this nice flat
place to work
this We aren't even going to know what
to do with ourselves I know what to do
with it You want all of them
Yeah Heat Heat
Good morning Hi We're at the container
and I just want to preface this by
saying we spent all day at the container
yesterday We spent a lot of time
cleaning the material prepping it
learning how to cut the material We
learned that your dad is a lot more
versatile than we realized cuz he did
all the forms for the goat barn with an
angle grinder I tried that like three
times I'm like nope not going to happen
I do not have enough experience with an
angle grinder to make these cuts So I
borrowed a miter saw that can cut
through meadow from a friend and also
spent half the day figuring out It's
kind of ancient It's very old We finally
figured out the right angle on it We cut
a lot of pieces of metal and wasted a
lot of pieces of metal I'm glad you
bought extra And we built two
two frames Two frames for a window
because the first one we think is
probably just a hair too big Just a hair
But just in case what we need to do is
build the frame for the door first Then
if we have extra material we can build a
second frame that we know for sure is
the right size Right So we got our angle
locked in with the saw Y So this should
go a little easier today And also we
have another Yesterday was like 50 mph
winds It was crazy We did most of the
work in here to make you know fire
danger So hopefully today we'll get all
the door and window forms finished And
then we're not going to cut any holes in
the container day It might even rain
today and it's supposed to be windy
again So we're going to get everything
prepped and ready Get all the forms
built and ready to go And then hopefully
tomorrow we'll start Remember how I had
perfect weather last week and then this
week sucks But remember how this is like
the exact same weather we had when your
dad was here working on a container Yeah
Yeah Okay Well metal work means rain and
cold weather So apparently Yeah All
right Let's get started
It's within a 16th of an
inch So we got the door form built The
sizes changed a little bit We decided to
shrink it down so it's really tight on
the existing door Go a little bit
smaller than the rough opening so that
we don't have a bunch of like space to
fill since it's right to the outside of
the building and it's just the metal
container So Adelaide's marking You can
see we're going in about 38 of an inch
to get the right width and then we'll
have to adjust the height But first
we're going to grab some lunch and then
we'll come back out You're in the way
You're in the
way Okay so we got the door frame built
this morning and we we've been looking
at this other window We finally decided
we're going to take this one back It's a
3ft x 4 ft window It's just too big for
the container Like you know it's only 8
ft tall And by the time you get a door
in on this side it just is kind of
comically large So we're going to take
this back and get I think a 2ftx 3 ft
vertical window which should look better
in that space
You ready Is it going to fit me Yeah
it's huge Are you ready Not really I'm
terrified It's a lot of straight lines
that you have to make Yep And I have to
reuse this panel so you can't mess up
Gosh No pressure
All right Today's the day We're cutting
holes in the
container
Pretty hot huh Pretty hot
My cactus Yeah those look nice My
singular khaki outfit looks real
good Wear those every day
All right I just got one little corner
here I'm standing back You ready Yep
It's like this side your left side
is stuck No I just I didn't make the I
made the tabs too big
We have a freaking hole And it looks
good
Well it's all only taking all day But
finally have a window in We're getting
ready to weld it Ashley's getting
started We got a a wind drop cloth cuz
it's a little bit windy We don't want it
to mess up the
weld Just trying to dial in our settings
for this thicker gauge steel Thinner
gauge steel Sorry
dinner but I can stay All right don't
want to fall in
love Try to stay but keep on say I'm
right but I can stay all right now What
the She said "I've been waiting for
love but it ain't coming And I ain't
making enough That's what he thinking So
he chasing a ball Everybody chasing
running me I'm raising a c It is time
It's time to install the very first
window all by ourselves This part's easy
Yeah It's all this other part getting up
to this point
Ready Good morning friends We had a
pretty successful window install
yesterday So today we're tackling the
big boy the door
Um yeah this is much more fiddly Has to
be a lot more precise because we want
the door to fit perfectly in this this
frame and in the opening without too
much space on either side So we're not
having to like try to fill it in somehow
with some sort of material You want to
get right up to that metal Um can I just
say doing this with the Jackaryi 5000
Plus has been completely different Like
when we were out here doing the goat
barn container we didn't have any power
down here and we just we were running
that generator the whole time It was so
loud and like smelly and every time the
welder stick would fire the the engine
on the generator would be like and it
would like hit the overload button and
it just felt like we were right on the
edge the whole time Now it's like it
just everything the grinders the welders
they all just silently work and we don't
have to worry about it And we don't even
need to pull out the solar panels
because since we have our big 3000 W
solar panel in the goat barn at lunch
I'll just roll it over into the shade
plug it into the goat barn and it'll
charge up while we eat which is perfect
So wish us luck First door container
install We are trying something a little
bit different We went ahead and taped
off on the outside of the line so that
Jonathan can see it a little bit better
Just more for visibility than anything
So we can grind to it I can always You
always want to cut it short on the
inside On the inside and then we'll
grind to the line Yeah But we were
having trouble seeing the line because
of like burn marks and stuff last time I
don't know The tape might get burned too
Yeah We'll see what happens Yeah We'll
see It might It might be a great idea
Who knows
Heat Heat
I don't know what is going on It is
snowing Like what are we doing We're in
April It was not supposed to even rain
today And I have a big hole in the
container It's not good
Uh yeah Hopefully this passes over
quick Not sure that it will though
So of course every time we do a project
like this we check the weather to make
sure it's going to be nice And it always
says zero chance of precipitation And
then as soon as we cut a hole in the
container guess what Rain snow
hail We haven't had weather like that in
months It's crazy Well I guess we did at
the workshop or the meet and greet But
anyway we are in a time crunch to get
this door installed and get all of our
stuff back in the container
electronics
So we finally got the frame to fit in
the hole It fits perfect It's a snug
beautiful fit And so the next step is
Jonathan is going to go ahead and start
grinding off the paint around the frame
um on the container to where we can weld
the frame in place So I'm taking shelter
in the truck cuz it is freezing It was
just snowing Now it's raining It's just
miserable out there We are so so close
to being done with this door It might
just be one window one door by the time
Hayden gets here We'll see
The frame is in place We have some extra
supports because we don't have you know
a piece of meadow at the bottom So we've
got two boards that are the same
distance as the top here just to like
keep everything square and pl We did not
put a level on it Do you want to put a
level on it before we got started Sure
Probably should do that We're six foot
level Right on Camera
hands It's right on Look at us Look at
us Who would have thought Not me Okay so
I'm going to start welding the form in
place Hopefully we can get that door
hung Yeah cuz
Yeah storms are coming All right ready
Yep Let's go
How's it going
I just did three really good welds and I
feel really
good Just three
This is a hinge side so it's important
True
thing Set it away I mean if we set it in
here what's it going to tell us It's a
nice uh step out there It's not too tall
Yeah I was thinking I was wondering if
we should make like a wooden step there
It's not bad It's not bad Yeah
What if we nailed it on the first try
Let's see Which way does the door go
This Mhm
All right let's see where it is Ready
Yep
It's a little
tight Long enough I think that's just
the weather seal
All
right we did it We installed a door in
the container Go us Now here's our
dilemma We bought and planned for a
second window that'll go right around
here vertical so you can get in and out
of in case of emergency A little bit
lower to the ground Here's the problem
We only have one day left to do this And
the frame that we made isn't going to
work So that means we would have to
build the frame cut the hole install the
frame and then install the window It's
going to be sun up to sun down a whole
full day and that is the only day we
have left before Hayden and Millie get
here and I just don't know if we have
time The the problem is though if we
don't get to it before they get here
we're not going to get to it anytime
soon It's going to be after the
conference probably like 2 months from
now we're going to have to put all this
stuff back in all the shelving back in
And and then if we go back to put that
window in we have to take it all back
out cuz when you're grinding and you're
welding and you're cutting uh it just
makes a huge mess There's stuff spraying
everywhere It's like a whole thing and I
just kind of want to be done with it but
also there's a lot going on So we're
still debating what we're going to do To
be determined We'll let you know
Well we decided we're going to put this
window in Yep We pick up Hayden and
Millie in about 24 hours So we have a
room to make Yeah We got to get this
window in So we have to build a new form
Mhm Cut it in weld it in install the
window and then we still have to
and paint But that's pretty easy Sounds
easy Um so far it's taken us a day to do
one window and a day to do a door Yeah
So maybe we can get it done But we
already had the frames We already had
the frames made So this is But we have
like it's all dialed in I think it'll go
faster now that we kind of know kind of
know what we're doing Yeah But the
problem is we have zero extra material
So if we mess up we're screwed Okay Okay
Let's get
started
Pretty proud of those welds I am Those
look good
Getting the hang of it at on the last
one On the la It always happened on the
last metal window form made So now that
we have that outside measurement we are
transferring that to the inside here
Getting this marked so we can start
cutting It's only 10:00 It only took us
like 3 hours to
build Took less than last time So yeah
we're going to use a laser level Make
sure this is all kind of centered up
Same height as the doorway and hopefully
centered with the window on the opposite
side or at least close to it
And that's it Right Easy peasy Yeah Our
kids are making the slime Yeah We got it
easy today I All we have to do is cut a
hole
We have another hole
The kids have been such a help all week
as we're trying to get this container
ready before Hayden and Millie get here
And they're like making lunch and making
sure everything's cleaned and ready It's
been a huge help So big thanks to the
kids I'm going to have to get them a
special treat sometime or make it maybe
I'll just make them make them some pie
or something That's adorable
Well it rained a little bit and now it's
clearing back up I don't know Super
weird weather We're almost done
welding Almost there Almost And then we
get to put it the window in and then put
all the stuff back and then we're done
Yeah
Look at us getting
organized again I know I feel like I
just did this But now if I back up room
we have Look we have windows and doors
Welcome to Placer Haven
Oh my goodness friends We did it Second
window in Everything is cocked and
sealed We still have to come back and
put some primer over the bare metal to
make sure it doesn't rust cuz it's going
to be a while before we actually get to
doing like we're going to trim
everything out and paint it just like
the go barn But that is a long long
long time from now As you can see the
weather decided to come back So this
will maybe give us a good leak test if
it rains Yeah maybe Either way Hayden
and Millie are coming tomorrow We'll see
you
then Going to find somewhere to slow it
down Buy a little place way out of
town Going to take my time cuz it's all
mine Trade my pride for quiet
life Maybe then my time will come
around Way out of
town Down in the hills of fangaro
There's a
