The Good Samaritan
Simon was in town listening to Jesus. He really liked to hear Jesus talking
because he told such interesting stories.
And you shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Who is my neighbor?
Well, there was a man who went on a journey.
At home, mum and Sarah were outside in the backyard.
Suddenly, Simon hurried through the gate, breathless.
Simon, where have you been?
Mum, Sarah, I've just been down the village listening to Jesus.
He was telling a story. It was all about a...
Simon, my boy, slow down. Get your breath back.
There, now tell us all about it.
Okay. Jesus told a story about a Jewish man who was on a journey, walking along by himself.
When, out of nowhere, some robbers came along and beat him up.
They stole his money and everything he had.
He lay there, badly hurt, and he couldn't get up.
But as he was lying there, a man who was kind of quite important-looking came by.
So, did the man help him?
No, that's just it. He said he was in a hurry and he couldn't stop, so he rushed on.
Then, not long after, another man came by. He was a priest.
Oh, I bet he helped him.
No, it was so sad. The priest didn't stop to help him either.
Poor man.
He must have wondered how he was going to manage to stay alive.
But don't worry, the next part of the story is so cool.
Finally, a third man came along, riding his donkey. He was a Samaritan.
And, you know, I heard that the Jews and Samaritans aren't even that good friends.
But it was this man who stopped to help.
He got off his donkey and came over to the man lying on the ground.
He felt sorry for him, so he bent down and gave him some water, then put bandages on his wounds.
And then, he helped him up onto his donkey.
And he carefully took him to the nearest town,
where he found an inn where the man could stay until he was better.
And he paid for it all himself.
Oh, that was a really kind thing to do.
Yes, that's what Jesus said. He wants us to be like the third man,
a Samaritan, ready to help people and be kind to them.
Yes, to love our neighbour as ourselves means to treat others with kindness,
just as we would like to be treated.
And then, Sarah and Simon told the story all over again, with mum listening.
Then, along came the good Samaritan.
Oh, Derek!
