Abandoned 100 Year Old Paper Mill and Power Plant Exploring
Over the years I have explored the many buildings of this abandoned paper mill and its attached power plant, also abandoned. My first time was in 2016, having known about this property for a long time I finally attempted to explore and quickly and easily found myself inside. I knew right away that this was going to take several visits to do this location properly.

The roots of this abandoned power plant and paper mill took hold in the midst of the Industrial Revolution. Starting in 1820 and over the following two centuries, the company grew from 20 sawmills along the banks of the St. Lawrence River to the 40+ pulp, paper and wood mills
This facility had been running since 1913 and had been a pioneer in the development and implementation of many paper making innovations. It was built as a subsidiary of the Chicago Tribune to provide the paper needs of the news paper
The mill building was completed early in 1913, and the first paper machine at the newly-formed Company started up on September 15, 1913. The second paper machine started up a few weeks later. In 1914, the mill produced 31,707 short tons of paper, which represented 93% of the Tribune’s requirements.
During 1914, this paper mill produced 31,707 tonnes of newsprint – almost the entire annual requirement of the Chicago Tribune. After the first World War, the mill began supplying paper to the newly established New York Daily News, in addition to the Tribune.
The original mill in this video continued production until 1982, when a new facility on the same property went into operation. In the 1990s, the Canadian paper industry underwent a series of amalgamations and larger forestry product companies absorbed the company that operated this mill
For whatever reason, once the new mill was built, they only demolished a small portion of the old structure to make way for a new power plant. Early in 2017 it was announced that paper making would cease at the new facility, citing lagging sales and higher costs.
Today, the original buildings are unfit for use and the newer mill sits empty and vacant, the entire property is now listed for sale, but with the economy in its current state, I think it will be many many years until this land is used again
Having been to this location several times, I had only explored the power plant and remains of the old mill once by myself. Knowing how much RiddimRyder and I love exploring industrial sites together, we both had been wanting to get here. Finally in 2020 we set a date to meet up and get this one done and 2020 was the best year to do so. With international exploring off the tables and limited industrial sites in Ontario, our 2020 year of exploring was almost all houses - so this abandoned industrial site was a great way to end the year.
The explore and walk in started off fine, however it took a turn for the worse literally the second we walked inside the door. Entering the first section, it was dark and for whatever reason I had let my guard down, not paying attention to the fact that I was walking on an old rotten wooden floor, I took three steps in and I immediately dropped through the floor. my camera bag and my arms caught me from dropping all the way in but on the way down my left hip took the brunt of the impact on the concrete foundation that I SHOULD have stepped on. Luckily I was fine and a beautiful bruise would very quickly develop!
