Omeprazole belongs to the drug class of proton pump inhibitors and is widely used in gastric acid related disorders to reduce acid secretion.
It is indicated for a variety of disease conditions, including the following.
In the treatment of peptic ulcer and gastroesophageal reflux diseases.
As a part of the Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy.
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
For prevention of gastritis in patients who are taking long term non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
And for stress ulcer prophylaxis in critically ill patients.
In this video, our primary goal is to explore the common adverse effects of omeprazole.
Omeprazole is generally well-tolerated by most individuals.
Potential side effects include the following.
Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.
Central Nervous System effects such as headache, dizziness, and rarely, confusion or somnolence.
Long-term effects include hypomagnesemia, which can lead to muscle spasms, seizures, or arrhythmias.
Vitamin B12 deficiency due to reduced gastric acid production.
Increased risk of fractures due to impaired calcium absorption.
Increased risk of Clostridioides difficile infections and other enteric infections.
And very rarely, chronic kidney disease.
