Leslie Mann, a big name in Hollywood sits down with Lorraine to chat about her upcoming film 'Welcome To Marwen' and what it was like to work with Steve Carell again.
We're talking to Leslie Mann. Look, I was just saying to her,
isn't it a really, really good film? Yes, you had really good fun doing it and
reunited with Steve Carell after 13 years. Yes, I know.
Such a different film though. Really difficult to categorise this film.
Based on a true story of course, this poor man that was beaten up
and was in a coma for what, nine days in a coma or something?
And then it's so interesting because he sort of invented a world
to have a safe space, I think, to heal. And that world is remarkable, isn't it?
It is, it is. It's like nothing I've ever seen before.
It's a new type of motion capture that the world is a doll world where he,
Steve Carell, Mark Hagenkamp, plays the hero.
And he makes up this world, doesn't he? He makes up this world where he, yeah.
Where you're all dollies. And protected by all of these
strong women and, that was me. And yeah, it's really special.
It's quite a spectacle, just like the animation part of it is really fun to watch.
I've never seen anything like it. Never seen anything like it.
Me neither. Didn't know what to expect.
And it was just remarkable. What I loved about it as well though,
it's the women that are the heroes because the women saved him.
And we should say it was a terrible crime and he only got picked on because
he quite liked wearing high-heeled shoes. In real life and why not?
He's not doing anybody any harm. No.
Not doing anybody any harm. Not at all.
Then he finds himself in this horrible situation and it's like
this, he has to create this world in order to survive.
Yes. It's amazing, isn't it?
Yes. Did you get to meet him?
Steve? Yeah, to get to meet the real
The real. I didn't, no. I watched, there's a documentary called Welcome to Marwenka
and I watched that a lot. Steve and Robert Zemeckis got to spend time with him and so
I heard through them what he was like. And is he okay with it? Did he enjoy it?
Oh no, he loved it. Good.
He's very happy with it. He couldn't be happier.
I'm glad. I'm really glad. And what was it like though? How did the whole process work
of you turning into this dolly? That must have been quite strange.
Well, we had to wear these motion capture suits which are this, it's like a light grey,
thin polyester material.
Lovely.
That just kind of hangs on your body. It doesn't like hold anything in. It's just,
it's the most unflattering outfit. Like the women just look terrible and the men look like they
just have guts with no... Yes.
It's morning. And it's so, it's just so unflattering. Like the opposite of Spanx.
Right. Ah, right. Okay.
So, and then they put these little dots on us that are connected to the computers and then
so you can move around and see yourself being animated as you move.
It's amazing what they can do now. It's extraordinary.
Yeah, it's really cool. It really is.
But she's a lovely woman, your character. I mean, she looks after him. She sort of takes
care of him and nurtures him and kind of understands him.
Yes. Because he's an interesting,
interesting fella and especially when all of this is going on and he's retreated into this world,
it just shows you what your imagination can do to help you.
To help you. Yeah, to help you through.
Very different to anything we've ever seen you in, isn't it?
Right. It is different. Yes.
And was that part of why you really wanted to do it?
Well, I really wanted to work with Steve again and then, of course, Robert Zemeckis,
who I love and he's, you know, one of my heroes and so I was super happy to be able to do that.
There's a lot of buzz about it. A lot of Oscar buzz as well.
Oh yeah? Oh good.
Already. I'm excited.
Already. A lot of people talking about it. Again, it's just one of these things that you don't
usually get in cinema where it's completely different to anything else. Completely different
to anything else. And how are you? How is life? Are you good?
Yes, I'm good. We just flew in last night. I'm kind of confused. We took off in the dark,
landed in the dark and then woke up in the dark and it's still dark.
And you've got to be still dark. It's a bit discombobulating when that happens.
Have you got some time here? Are you going to be able to do things?
Just tomorrow and then we go home the next day. Yeah, so not enough time. But we're coming back
for Christmas. Oh, excellent.
We're spending Christmas here. My entire family.
Wow. Yeah.
That'll be great. I know. I'm excited.
That'll be really good. Oh, that'll be fantastic. Enjoy. I hope we get...
It would be lovely for you to get a white Christmas. Look at the family.
See, you've done this thing that is possible. You know, people say, oh, it's very difficult
in Hollywood and it's very difficult being an actress and all of that. You've got a really
normal life and a normal family and you've got a really unusual job.
I do. I know. I'm so lucky. I really am so lucky that I get to, you know, raise my kids and then
do movies like this and work with these people. I just, I'm super, super lucky. Grateful.
But yes. Well, enjoy Christmas here in the UK,
which we'll hope that it is a white Christmas because that always makes it very, very special.
And this movie is honestly, it's remarkable. Thank you so much.
Absolutely remarkable. Thank you.
