Hi everyone, I'm Jeff Teague.
Welcome to Toyota Jeff Reviews.
Today we're looking at 2022 Tacoma, and I'm going to help you decide between two trim
levels, SR5 and Trail Edition.
And when I say two different trim levels, what I mean is they're both SR5s, but the
Lunar Rock one over there has a Trail Edition package on it.
It's I believe over $3,000, I'll show you that on the window sticker at the end, but
it really makes it its own entity, its own monster, its own trim.
Now, the versatility of SR5, this is the workhorse in the Toyota Tacoma lineup.
And what I mean by that is you can get it in Access Cab, Double Cab like you see here,
Two-Wheel Drive like you see here, or Four-Wheel Drive.
This is in Super White.
And then the SR5 Trail Edition, that's like a t-shirt that says one size fits all.
It's going to be the Double Cab configuration that you see here.
It's also going to be only in Four-Wheel Drive.
You can get it in four different colors.
Lunar Rock that you see here, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, and Super
White, baby!
Woo!
First of all, let's take a look at the front ends.
They're going to be very different here.
The Trail Edition has the Toyota Heritage grille on it that says Toyota.
It's sort of a combination.
You'll see this on TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport, the three-dimensional design here.
That's kind of cool.
And then it also has the radar housing for the Toyota Safety Sense, along with camera
technology here.
It's also been raised a little bit in the front because the air dam has been removed
on this one.
It does not have LED fog lights, it does not have LED lights, but it just really makes
an impression.
It stands out with that bold bronze.
And you'll see bronze accented all the way throughout, regardless of whether you get
the black, the white, the gray, the lunar.
And then this one right here, it has bold...
I always liked this grille design on SR5.
It's bold, it's horizontal, it's chunky, it's tough looking, and it's got a chrome surround
on it.
It does not have LED headlights.
It does come with fog lights on it.
Which front end do you like better?
Also, the Trail Edition comes with more protection in the front because, like the name would
imply, they think you're probably going to be taking it on the trail.
So you can see this accent piece right here in front.
It does come with tow hook on the SR5, and then we've got some protection there.
But look at the Trail Edition here.
It's got full protection skid plate, like that, like that, like that.
It's got a higher approach angle and departure angle, so it's more designed to be on the
trails.
When we compare the side profiles, you can tell some differences, mostly with the wheels
and the tires and the lift.
A traditional SR5 is going to come with more traditional tires, we'll say.
And then it's also going to come with either dark gray or black 16-inch alloy wheels.
It looks very nice, right?
This one has an upgrade as well.
You're going to see Goodyear, Wrangler, Territory, all-terrain tires.
And then these 16-inch bronze wheels with the Toyota symbol.
And then these are 265, 70, R16.
On the SR5, you're going to see P245, 75, R16.
Now look at the over fenders here.
The fenders, color keyed on SR5, and then we've got black all the way down here.
This one does not come standard with mudguards.
This one does come with mudguards.
You'll see black Tacoma badging as well, SR5 badging as well.
And then we'll compare that to the chrome badging on an SR5.
Are you formulating an idea of which one in your mind you like best?
I can't decide.
Again, more trail versatility here because we have lifts.
That's right, we missed the lift.
No, we didn't.
This one has a 0.5-inch lift thanks to a spacer between the rear axles and the leaf springs,
and then 1.1-inch lift in the front thanks to taller coil springs.
So can you tell the difference here?
Which one do you like more better?
I'm king of the world.
On an SR5, we might see gray.
We might see black.
The Trail Edition is only going to have black interior with bronze stitching.
So here's our friend, SR5, without the pimping up of Trail Edition.
And maybe the front seats will give us an idea if we like this one.
I see all-weather mats on here.
I see leather-wrapped steering wheel, the 4.2-inch information display that tells me
my door's ajar, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, safety connect, sunglass holder here, and
then we've got sliders with lighted mirrors as well.
Let's go look at the Trail.
We'll take the same route here.
We'll start at the back seat because I do want to point out the bronze stitching.
I mean, it's a Trail, isn't it?
I mean, we've got that, so we've got to match on the inside too.
The bleep definitely matches the bleep.
So here we go.
There's a Torrio guard on this particular one.
I just don't want to take the tag off.
You guys ready to see the front seat?
All right, front seat time.
Like a DJ.
Wicky-wicky!
And a hip-hop, hippy-tippy to the hip-hop, and you don't stop rocking to the bang-bang
boogie.
Same assets up top here.
Wait a minute!
Oh!
This one has locking rear differential.
If you're watching this video, you probably know about locking rear differential.
You probably used it extensively already, or at least to get you out of a bind.
What do I mean by bind?
Well, if one of the wheels is slipping, locking rear differential will lock your wheels on
the same axle, so they both spin the same revolution speed at the same time.
So they're both doing the same amount of work, and it helps you if you're stuck on one wheel
or if you're in a rut or one wheel is slipping, locking rear differential, just push it at
low, low speeds, that'll get you out, and then you just take it off.
Good benefit here, and that's standard on all Trail Editions.
Are we going to see some differences here?
Yeah, probably so, especially when I open up the tailgate here.
We've got Tacoma color keyed, stamped right in, chrome V6, got the backup camera right
here, integrated tow hitch with your hookups.
Then we've got black badging that says Trail, color keyed, V6 is in black as well.
Other than that, they look about the same, right?
Let's open these up.
Let's open it up here.
All right, I like that slowly lowering tailgate here.
We've got some tie downs.
We've got a composite bed.
You see that in Tundra now.
Then we've got traditional wheel wells right here.
We've got tie downs, deck rail system, not there, here.
There's also no plug-in for power.
This one here, it's a hidden secret.
It's like Fight Club.
We don't talk about it.
We don't talk about Bruno, no.
Now, the Trail Edition, this is a little bit different here.
It's got lockable storage on both sides, so the good and the bad, this will be a polarizing
feature.
You're going to love it or you're not going to like it.
You'll have a use for it.
You'll not have a use for it.
It takes away, it limits space in the bed if you want to put more stuff down and up.
Here, we can open it up and we've got some storage.
I say we can open it up and we've got some storage.
This is interesting to me because truck owners are always fighting for more storage.
Why wouldn't you want more compartments, more cubbies, more spots that you can put your
things, especially if you don't want them to be seen and you want them protected and
locked up.
This one right here, Ice Baby, Tacoma Trail Edition Ice Baby.
This one's lockable and insulated, so you can use it like a cooler.
Bobby Boucher, that's not a cooler.
Then we can remove and drain.
Could you use this one?
Let's go around to the other side.
See, it definitely limits the space, but it does more for you.
I don't know.
It's up to you.
Then this one right here, it's got the 400 watt grounded outlet in the back.
Now you can do more work.
You can do more things while you're camping, fishing, outdoorsmanship, hiding.
I just made a new word.
Outdoorsmanship, hiding.
How do I put in a claim for a new word?
I'll do a word to your mother.
As far as pricing, remember that they're both based on SR5, whether you get the Trail Edition
or the non-Trail Edition.
They're both going to have the same factory MSRP to start off with.
This one here is going to be a little bit over $33,000.
I think $33,300.
This one's going to be $35,800 to start off with.
I'm going to show you the window stickers in just a minute.
The Trail Edition package with all those features will be just a little bit over a $3,700 upgrade.
Let's look at the window sticker and then you tell me, is it worth $3,700 and do you like it?
Both of these particular ones have the 3.5 liter Atkinson cycle V6 engine, 278 horsepower,
265 pound-feet of torque, and then they're matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Oh, now we got to talk about pricing.
Got both window stickers here.
Let's go through them.
You can skip to the end if you don't want the window stickers, but it's going to tell you
specifications and pricing so you can have some help with building.
SR5 two-wheel drive.
It could also be four-wheel drive right here.
Let's go back to this one.
Super wet, made in Mexico.
Fuel mileage here on the two-wheel drive combines for 21, 19, and 24 our city and highway.
Here we go.
Standard features.
We're going to see the real difference.
To see 16-inch alloy wheels, this can be gray or black for no charge switch-out.
Has the 8-inch audio.
This one here has the technology package added to it.
Blind spot with rear cross traffic alert.
See the starting price, $33,230.
It's a little off on that one.
Same ballpark, though.
And then this one has all-weather floor mats, but no extra factory options.
The next vehicle is going to have a lot of options added to it, so you can see how does that affect everything.
$35,300 on this one as it's equipped.
Look at the center and the right column.
See the extra options added to the factory and the regional assembly port.
SR5 four-by-four.
Lunar Rock, Mexico.
The fuel mileage is going to be different because it's a four-by-four.
It goes down just a little bit.
Here we go.
16-inch style steel wheels on this one.
Audio.
They all do Apple CarPlay, Android Auto.
XSeries XM trial.
$35,800 on this one.
This one has parking sonar in the back.
Premium audio added.
Navigation.
And it's got that trail edition package.
This is $3,765, so take a look at it.
See if all the options work out well for you on your balance sheet.
And then it has the tech package, too, that gives you blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert.
And we get it delivered.
And see, it's just going to have a higher price tag because it has so much equipment on this specific one.
You don't need to get all these options, but it's on this specific one.
So this one has several options.
Trail guard platinum.
Paint protection.
Cable charging package.
More USBs.
And then mud guards.
Okay, so this one has mud guards added to it.
That's not standard on the trail edition.
I thought it might be, but it's not.
So I learned.
This one will be $44,000, but it's got a lot of equipment.
So see, there's a big range between $35,000 on this one and $44,000.
Thanks for watching my video, everyone.
Which one do you like better?
The traditional SR5 or the upgraded trail edition?
Which one would you like if they cost the same?
Some people will love that bronze edition, the trail edition.
Some people won't want it.
But remember, it has the locking rear differential and the lift, which could help you out on the trails, along the streams, in the mountains, at the beach.
So that could be a useful, a very practical tool that you'll use all the time.
All right.
Ha, gotcha.
