Malhar is one project that we enjoyed working with and the whole challenge was not about what
we need to do but about what we shouldn't be doing and how silent can architecture be
in that beautiful site. Malhar is 3,600 square feet home located in a six acre plot but we chose
one acre separately for organizing the landscape and the house itself while we have left the other
five acres just for the agriculture. We want a place where we can relax with the family,
with our extended family members and with friends and all where we can have quality time together
and enjoy the music the kids can play everywhere so finally I ended up in this project.
Malhar has a lot of nuances of what we know as traditional architecture but Malhar is not a
We have laterite wall because the laterite is available in quarries just one kilometer
from the site so it's a very local material. Apart from that there is nothing traditional about
Malhar. It's very contemporary planning in terms of the entry and when you come to the sit-out
you are not actually entering into a house but you are opening up into the landscape.
It's a very different way of entering into space. From the sit-out there are actually two wings,
one to the personal space of two bedrooms and a family living and one to the dining,
formal living and a small kitchenette and another bedroom there.
We actually used teak wood quite extravagantly because there is a long set of
windows which is all wood but I think that helped us to keep that natural texture and
the materiality going with the whatever be the surroundings because the whole area is
The walls are all gray textured so it doesn't announce its presence there and the floor is
cotta stone and that cotta stone also blends with the wall and the roof is just the clay tile roof
which goes with the soil color which is there. We have navigated the pondus with depths,
pavilions and also have continued it to an infinity pool which overlooks the arachnid trees.
There will be a point of time where you just cannot realize which is architecture and nature
and I am sure that Malhar will age gracefully to that point.
We don't want a place where a high-rise building or anything, we want a place where we can simply
relax, close your eyes, listen to the music, enjoy the day that's it.
There is a music of materials so Malhar as a music I think there is a music where during the
seasons, there is a music during the rain, there is a music of material, there is a music of space
so I think the name just suits that home quite a lot.
Malhar is the raga of rain during monsoon time it rains like you know like that rhythmic
that's really fantastic so that is why we thought we will have a place where we can
enjoy every drop of rain so that is how Malhar is formed.
So it's all about how life and nature interact at different moments of time
and different seasons and when you navigate this it becomes a very interesting journey through design.
