Description
The Fall of Gondolin is one of the earliest stories written by J.R.R. Tolkien, later included in The Silmarillion. It tells the tragic tale of the hidden Elven city of Gondolin, its betrayal, and ultimate destruction by Morgoth's forces. This story is significant in Middle-earth’s history, setting the stage for later events in The Lord of the Rings.
Summary
Gondolin was a secret city founded by Turgon, the Elven King, to protect his people from Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. For centuries, it remained hidden, but Morgoth’s spies and treachery eventually led to its downfall.
The story follows Tuor, a mortal man guided by the Vala Ulmo, who arrives in Gondolin and warns King Turgon of Morgoth’s impending attack. However, Turgon refuses to abandon the city. Meanwhile, Maeglin, the king’s treacherous nephew, secretly betrays Gondolin’s location to Morgoth.
Morgoth launches a massive assault on the city, sending Balrogs, dragons, and an army of orcs. Despite the valiant efforts of the Elves, Gondolin falls. Tuor, his wife Idril, and their son Eärendil manage to escape through a secret passage, ensuring the survival of their bloodline, which later leads to the birth of Elrond and, eventually, Aragorn.
The fall of Gondolin marks one of the greatest tragedies in Middle-earth’s First Age, showcasing themes of heroism, betrayal, and destiny.
