Hey everybody, it's jennifer from tarle speech and we have a another
Ultimate pronunciation challenge master class today. Our sound today is f
So we're going to talk about that. How do we spell it?
learn how to
Make the sound and pronounce that do a little bit of practice and then I will tell you
When the daily practice will be posted so every day I am posting
Practice where you repeat after me that you can do every day as many times as you would like
And it is at the beginning of words in the middle of words at the end of words and then in sentences
the f sound
the symbol for the
f sound is
How do we spell the sound we can spell it with one f that we see in fit
two f's
in off
a ph in phone
and a
gh in
cough
Okay, let's talk about what our mouth is going to do and then i'm going to show you a close-up
So your lips are pulled back. What I mean by that is your lips are not
Tuckered at all. They are just
Relaxed and pulled back think of more of a smile shape. Although we are not going to be smiling
It's just that retraction
Of the lips your lips are open. We do not want to close them
If you close your lips
That will sound like the p sound so keep the lips open
and the teeth
Are going to touch the lip sometimes I describe this as gently biting
the inside
Or the outside of the bottom lip
Our tongue is neutral. It's not touching anything
and the
Airflow is going to continue
out of your mouth
And your voice is off. Okay, so let's take a close-up. Look. What does this look like?
You can see my mouth is open my lips are pulled back
I am gently
biting the inside of my bottom lip
Not actually biting but my teeth are gently touching there. Some people will bite the outside of their bottom lip
That is fine, too. I tend to keep my teeth in
The air is just continuously moving out and my voice box is not on it is not moving
That makes the sound a lot softer
You can now watch close-up videos of me saying
Every consonant and vowel sound and those will be posted to my youtube page as well
So check those out if you just want to see the close-up
All right, let's practice
So what we're going to do is I just want you to listen and then we will do some repeating practice
All right, so we have
foot
farm
phone
fish
photo
waffle
laughing
elephant
coffee
sofa
Off tough
puff
giraffe
stuff
Okay now repeat after me
foot
farm
phone
fish
photo
waffle
Laughing
elephant
coffee
sofa
Off tough cuff giraffe
stuff
Okay
one more
time
Go ahead and repeat
after
me
foot
waffle off
farm
laughing tough
phone
elephant cuff
Fish coffee giraffe
photo
sofa
stuff
Okay, how did you do?
You were struggling with that. Just remember you want to make sure that the air keeps moving out of your mouth
You want to keep your lips open so the air can move out?
If you close your lips that will sound like a p sound and you also want to make sure
That you do have your teeth and your lip kind of working together
to create
A little more of a friction with the air and that will help you to stay that sound
I do hear some people struggle with this sound and they say p or h
And those two tips will help you to avoid those mistakes
All right. Let's do some sentences again
Just listen and then we will do some repeating
four furious friends fight for the phone
Frank fields is our favorite friend from florida
Now repeat after me. We're going to start slowly and then we will take it up to normal speed
four
Furious friends
Fight for the phone
Four furious friends
Fight for the phone
Four furious friends fight for the phone
On to the next sentence
Frank fields
Is our favorite friend
from florida
Frank Fields is our favorite friend from Florida.
Okay, everybody, I hope that you did well with that.
If you're struggling, there are a few things you can do.
Think about over-pronouncing each word.
You can also think about going a little bit slower
by adding pauses after each phrase in the sentence.
And it's also okay to just do one word at a time
and then to add those all together.
It's also okay to go back and just practice some words
and then move on to the sentences.
Okay, so this week I will be posting
the beginning of word practice on Thursday,
F in the middle of words on Friday,
F at the end of words on Saturday,
and on Sunday sentences.
Thank you so much for being here, everyone,
and I hope to see you all next week for the V sound.
Take care, everybody.
