We hike the scenic Elfin Lakes trail in Garibaldi Provincial Park, camp at Nairn Falls Provincial Park (and see something unexpected there), and show you warranty work and one upgrade on our 2018 Roadtrek Zion.
Cold
But fun. All right, good morning
We're at Nairn Falls again. You've seen that one of our previous videos. We pulled in last night quite late about 9 30
I'm gonna say we're chasing Sun over the next day or so
Supposed to be cloudy and a little a little dismal over here for the next couple of days
So we're heading into Lillooet. Lillooet is about an hour and a half north of Whistler
Very dry almost desert like country some of the warmest country in Canada in the summer
So we're heading there today, but we stopped partway at Nairn Falls. We finished a hike recently at
Elfin Ridge or Elfin Lakes and we'll show you some of that where we got into the snow and mountains and then we
Stopping here just for one night and then we're heading off through Pemberton and off to Lillooet later today
Great spots. We'll show you some more video. You've already seen some scenes of this area, but just beautiful
We're going to be hiking into the Diamond Head area of Garibaldi Park today
We came in from the slummer side and
We're going to be hiking the Elfin Lakes Trail up to the ridge where there should be some really nice views
We'll see how far we get because there'll be lots of snow up there
First break we're just by the falls about 35 minutes up the trailhead
I think we're gonna be in snow for the rest of the trip, which is not unexpected considering. It's almost the beginning of June
Niki's scooting ahead. The Actrax you put on really helps in the snow. Some people have snowshoes on that seems to help as well
Maybe I'm just in boots
It's a little slower. So this is a red heather hut now
I've been here in the winter and literally had to dig down to get into it. So now
Still got snow around it. It'll be snow here probably until
maybe mid-july and
You can see this firewood piled up. There's a wood-burning stove inside. It's about five kilometers from the trailhead
Next hut is about 11 kilometers another 6k
The next hut is actually a lot bigger. You can probably sleep 30 plus people. It's also got propane heating
LED lighting running off solar so quite a lot more
Extensive than this one
And as you can see we've got we've got whiskey jacks here quite a few actually a
Lot of skiers come up here in the winter and snowshoers and and throughout the summer. So the whiskey jacks
Get fed a lot I think
The outhouse you can see it's high up and again in the winter. We've literally had to dig down about
Mmm, a meter sometimes maybe as much as meter and a half to get to the outhouse. So Mickey was kind enough to
Let me use her yak tracks and she'll put on the micro spikes. Micro spikes are
Much better when you're in icy or steeper terrain
The real advantage of them is actually on ice or they're like a mini
The act tracks are fine and slushy stuff like this as long as it's not icy or
Or too slippery
Where the act tracks are really nice is if you're on the road and it it turns into gravel for 30 feet
Or some rock you can just walk very comfortably in these whereas in the mini crampons
You can still walk on it, but you have to be careful. You'll dull the double crampons
The slog up the hill
Don't fall on your bum
Good job
We got a bit of a late start today, so we're not gonna finish the trip all the way to the other hut
We're about two kilometers away. I'll show you that in a second. It's just behind us, but it's been
It's been a great day. I don't think it could be much nicer with the Sun. It's really warm
I went into a sunshirt actually, but
Temperature itself is probably about 13 14 degrees Celsius, but in the Sun it's probably closer to 70 72 degrees Fahrenheit
So very nice, and you'll see from the footage. There's just like
Nothing, but endless views I you know kind of apologize for likely all the scenic shots
You're gonna see because there's just so many we can't leave them out, but hopefully not too many
So the next hut the Elfin shelter hut and there's two lakes will be still frozen over
it's just down this Ridge you can sort of see the line and
It's about two kilometers away
Just at the sort of the the next part over and maybe two and a half K
And there's a big hut there that could sleep at least 30 people and it's also the campground. There's a number of
Camping areas it's beautiful to come up here in the summer
And then you can camp around the hut or stay at the hut if you like and then you can hike up to the left
Towards the top of Mount Garibaldi which is high enough up
I think it's probably getting close to 9,000 feet that it keeps its own weather
But you can get up onto a little area there called little diamond head
And that's a very nice day hike you go up past an area called the gargoyles then up and over and it's not a glacier
But it's usually a snowfield until right up into the end of the summer and that takes you to the base of the mountain
And if you come up this way you actually get to come up and go up to
another pathways that goes back and then up to that sort of flat cone, which is opal cone, and that's a
That's a volcanic area and that whole area is still a glacier
Behind it over the summer months and then off on the right is actually Mount Mamquam
So you could do a route up there the typical hike here though goes up and then down near the base of it where there's
A big lake getting up a Mamquam is a long a long process
But it can be a and it's really more of a climb than it is a hike
Yeah, almost coming out of the clouds
But I suspect it's gonna be almost coming out of the clouds for the next two and a half hours
We'll clip in a shot of Mount Garibaldi just to give you an idea what the mountain itself looks like
I've been up to the top of it. We did a climb up there one time and you couldn't see probably more than about 10 feet
It was kind of fun because when you're coming down
You couldn't see the big drop-offs and things like that. So he felt a lot safer than you probably were anyway
It's a beautiful mountain and most of Garibaldi Park goes back behind there
up until well past Whistler
We're on the way out snow's a little
softer
but
quite doable this trail gets so packed in from skiers and cross-country skiers or backcountry skiers, actually and
Snowshoers that even this time of year. It's still even with the Sun. It's still pretty firm
We just had a couple people run past us
they trail runners and they ran they would have run probably all the way up the hill to
The main hut and then back down which is a return about 22 K
which is a pretty good trail run and also particularly when you consider the fact that
There's still snow on the ground
We've arrived at the Nairn Falls Provincial Park campground
We had booked site number 10 for last minute. So not the best
But it's perfectly fine for tonight because we arrived pretty late. This is a quite a nice spot for your private
Number 17
Got trees on both sides and you're not that close to the other sites
and you're right across from a
Trail, we're just gonna check this out
So we were walking along this quiet trail the Green River Trail
and all of a sudden we hear this really loud roar and we're trying to guess if it's the highway or
a train going by and then all of a sudden the roaring just got really loud and then we turned around and there was a
waterboat on this river
So we're not sure if it's a tour boat or what but it's a jet boat made for the river and they're just
by the point where we were with the little
Rocks piled up. They're stopped right there
Just enjoying the waterfall coming on the side and probably as far as I suspect they can go up
It's kind of interesting to see but to be honest, it kind of disturbed the peace and serenity of the river
So we're gonna just wait and see if he'll come back this way
find out
Since our last trip we actually added three items to the van to our warranty items
One was the radio antenna it didn't arrive with a radio antenna
Just a little stub and the other was this handle that comes on the 2018 Zion's very solid
Primarily I think intended for people getting in that might need some additional support stepping up but very secure
We'll probably use it to just tie things down in our van
the other thing we added was a vent cover for our fantastic fan and we got I think it's a
Ultra breeze vent cover made by the same company that does fantastic fan
We got the smoke color the smoke color allows some light in which where we live I think is important
But you can get either black or white both which?
Block out a lot more light. You can see it up here and we've got a video just an operation
It's worked it really well. We went into the dealership to get the two warranty items done
It probably took about two or three weeks for road trek and the dealer to sort of coordinate getting the parts
And then I think we had a five or six week waiting time to get into the dealership
so that they could put the
The parts in all simple to do but it was just easier to get them to do it
So we're checking out now and then heading off to Pemberton where we're gonna stop and a little coffee shop get a tea or coffee
And some fresh baked goods fill up and water and then off to Lillooet which is about another hundred kilometers past
Looking forward to being a little bit
Hopefully a little bit warmer and we're gonna be staying at the BC hydro campground there
Which is a free campground and it's first-come first-served
first time we've been there and we're looking forward to doing some hiking and
Hopefully camping in a beautiful area
