Hey skaters, I'm Dirty Deborah Harry with the Dirty School of Skate and Sugar Roller Skates
and I'm here today in Lawndale, California at the corner of Furmona and Manhattan Beach Boulevard
at South Bay Skate Kids. You guys, you've got to check out this skate place. I just found out
about a hidden gem for sure. Come on, let's go check it out. This floor is amazing. Okay,
you can use outdoor wheels, you can use indoor wheels because this thing is as smooth as silk.
This floor is like butter, honey. I looked to try hard to find flaws in this floor but there isn't
any. Skaters of all types, of all styles, of all genres can do their thing on this floor.
There's something about the feeling of a smooth floor that is not slick and this is what we've
got here. So I'm wearing traditional outdoor wheels and it's perfect and then I put on my
other skates with traditional indoor hard wheels. No problem, feels super good. There's so much more
than just this beautiful space. Okay, let's talk to one of the owners. Come on out. You guys, this
is the lovely and talented Miss Adele. Hello. How are you? I'm great. Are you excited about your new
space? I'm stoked it's finally open. So this place isn't exactly new, like part of it's new.
When did you guys open? Well we opened our skate park back in 2019 but Jason had the business
since 2015. He was teaching kids hauling ramps out of the back of his truck and teaching little
ones in parks and we met skating and we decided to open this and now we're where we've doubled
in size in the past month. Nice. So you have, you guys don't know this yet and we're gonna take a
little peek. They've got a full little skate park in there, like a skate park with ramps and then we
got a pump track on the other side but just recently you guys acquired all of this space
to do like this mini cool roller rink, yeah? Yes. And so what's your vision for this space? I think
from the start of Skate Kids it's always been about community and building a community around
skating. Everybody can skate, that's always been our philosophy. Age two, we have our nine-month-old
on a skateboard. Everyone can skate and having that, giving people that freedom that they can do it
at any age and at any station in their life. I just started kind of park skating two years ago
so it's all possible and to have that connection with people and get moving, not being in front
of our screens and connect with people in that pure form of movement, it's beautiful.
One thing that I really love about this space in particular, so I'm talking to skaters who
are traditional rink skaters, you guys need to not miss out on this spot. When I tell you this is
a good floor, this is a good floor. So particularly if you're a dance skater, it's just big enough
to do dance skating in a group and you could have a large group out here. So you could literally
like call up all your friends, come on down here and practice all your new dance steps. If you're
old school and you've been doing this for a long time but you don't want to go to the beach or you
don't want to go to like a tennis court, because I don't know if you guys noticed, this place is
adorable. I love all these, what are these called? Awnings. Awnings, okay. I like the colorfulness,
I love the beautiful artwork. So I came from Long Beach, it took me less than 20 minutes to get here.
Like it's hard to find initially, so you got to look for what, the Mexican restaurant?
What's it called? It's called El Amigo. There you go. But we have a sign, a green sign and we're online
and you know all sorts of ways to to get here and be skating. We call it our skate oasis, that's what
we wanted to create. A place you walk into, you skate into and you feel like you've escaped a
little bit. One other thing I wanted to say about this place in particular is please, if you don't
live here and you're right about to comment, oh my god dirty, I would love to go there but I live
and you're going to tell me wherever it is you live, which is really far from here, I want you to
imagine this space where you live. Roller skating, it's not necessarily sustainable to have giant
roller rinks built. It's difficult, right? But these kind of spaces can pop up almost anywhere.
This could be indoors like their skate park or this could be this outdoor space like this
and I just want to highly encourage people from all over to try, if you really want to do this,
to try. Now there's so many creative ways to skate and it doesn't just have to be in a
of something that you thought you should be skating at a rink or you should be skating
somewhere. There are so many different places and opportunities to skate. I'm not going to make,
I'm not going to say it's like she was like, oh this was so easy, this was super easy. Hardest
thing in my life. Hardest thing I've ever done. I've had three kids and this is definitely the
hardest. So you and your partner Jason, do you feel like you guys have put a little blood,
sweat, and tears into making this whole facility happen? Absolutely. I mean it's our life. It's
it's our life. Like we love skating ourselves and we've made it a part of what we do and how
we give back and I mean literal blood, sweat, like actual blood, sweat, tears. I was wheelbarring
like 100 pound bags of cement laying this rink. Yeah. With the, I didn't know I was going to lay
the rink myself, but. But it can be done. You guys, I really just really want you to see this
space. So number one, you'll come and skate it, enjoy it, love and support it. So let's go inside,
okay? We're gonna, we're gonna take a little trip around the store and then let's go in and look at
the ramps and all that. See what else you can come down here and do, okay? Let's go. All right you
guys. So here we are again, South Bay Skate Kids and we're inside their shop. You guys take a look
around. This place is amazing. You can literally get, I'm gonna say like almost anything you need
for quad skating or skateboarding. Am I right? That's correct. What do you guys offer here?
Everything from just like your traditional quad skate. Yeah. All the way we do custom skates. So
you want a sneaker or a shoe mounted, we do that here too. We sell decks. We make custom decks
for students. We sell just all the gear, pads and helmets and all the way down to bearings and
slide blocks. Just all of the things that you need. We're a one-stop shop. So you have like
packaged skates but then you can build from scratch. Oh yeah. They can bring you their own
shoe. Yes. And you can put everything underneath it and make it skatable and then you can accessorize
like crazy. Yes, that's the fun part. This is a good place. I mean we try to be cute too. Right.
Why not? While we skate. Let's go in and check out. They're in progress right now. You know what's
really cool is you guys give lessons here. Yes. So let's go check inside because they're in the
process right now and these kids are gabbing the time of their life. Okay so we're in the skate
park portion of this amazing facility. Dill is going to give us a little tour. Yes. Come on in.
That's our padding area right there. Put your skates on. Grab your skateboard. Meet your coach.
Come on in. Can I say I love this? I love this idea. I feel like I'm gonna do this at home. Just
old trucks. Yeah. We have it as our toilet paper holder too. Nice. This is our big green ramp.
The big green ramp. This is nice. Practicing any tricks off the coping. Skateboard, quad skates.
Yeah. We do it all. We have kind of different levels. So this is our more advanced bigger
mini ramp. Still a mini ramp. Yeah. And we change portions of the floor in the center every week
to kind of give some variety and different challenges for the students.
And then this is my favorite ramp. This is the baby ramp. Yeah. It's just easy to practice stuff
on. So how many square feet is this indoor space? I would say around 2,000. Everything's smooth.
This is great. So and then we have out here, oh my god, you guys, come check. The pump track. Yeah.
We're gonna try it out. You guys, they have a pump track. Look at this. Like you literally
could do this alongside your house. Jason will demonstrate the pump track. I love it. Jason
was a partner in this amazing establishment. So tell me a little bit about why you guys started
this. Well, I originally started with skateboarding and it was really just a way that we could
skateboard every day and share something that we loved with the kids, you know. Now I saw you here
teaching kids and you have a really good voice. You have a really amazing demeanor. And we were
out there, but I could hear you over there on the pump track and I got psyched. I was like, yes,
I can do it. I mean, kids are learning how to skate. So I absolutely love it. Do you yourself,
you skate here on your own? So go get your board. Let's see what you can do. My skateboard.
Excellent. So what get kids like, when kids take a lesson from you and they come in here like
the first time, what can they expect? Definitely to have fun. Yeah. And to leave with some new
skills for sure. Yeah. They're gonna, they're gonna leave loving skateboarding or roller skating.
The world needs more places like this. It's a, it's hard work, but it's so worth it. Yeah. It's
so worth it. So do you roller skate here too? Of course. Will you put on your roller skates
and skate the pump track for us? I'll put them on. Yeah. Okay, cool.
Do you take all your little lessons out here? All the kids out here? Everyone gets to try.
And do they do this like right away? Or at what point do you be like, we got to get on that pump
track. I mean, um, you'll be surprised. Most of the kids do ramps like day one. Everyone can do
this as a certain level, you know, as you say, skating's for everyone. Everyone can do it.
All right. You guys, since you're now my new favorite couple, because,
oh my God, not only did they build this entire amazing space, but you're still together after
doing it. They both skate, they both skateboard. This is incredible. But I thought maybe we'll just
do something that can continue to keep you guys together. Let's do a little couple's dance skating.
What do you think? All right, let's do it. Sounds great. Gonna pull her towards, there we go.
And bring her around. Good. Now, if you want to turn her around, you keep skating, keep skating.
There we go. When I put it here and I cross it in front of you, you're going to wrap right into me.
Now bring her in and around a little. There we go. You're grabbing her right here.
Turn her in. There you go. The most important thing here is like you're here and you're
looking at her like, boom, we're coming. How are we doing? Was that it? Now pass her,
bring her up and over. There you go. Oh, that was, oh my God. Skaters, let's get down to logistics.
When are you open? We're open every day except Friday, Monday through Thursday, 12 to 6. We do
lessons here, but we also have open skate all day long. So you can come and skate under our
canopy of rainbows. Wait, wait, wait. I could come here like any day during the week. Yes.
Except Friday. Yes. And I could just roll around. Yes. We do open skates all day long. We do the
group classes. You guys, thank you so much for taking the time and hanging out with me today.
I appreciate it. This is so amazing. You guys, if you're in the area, come on down and support this
skate spot, South Bay Skate Kids. And heck, if your kids need lessons, this is the place to come.
All right, you guys, right? Bring them over. All right, you guys, we'll see you next time. Go
practice.
