Hello, everyone.
大家好。
Welcome to today's Everyday Chinese.
In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about nationalities.
For example, how to say that I'm American and how to ask someone else.
First, check out what you will learn today.
你是哪国人?
我是中国人。
你好,你是哪国人?
我是法国人,你呢?
我是中国人。
捷克是哪国人?
捷克是德国人。
In the previous lesson, we learned the names of different countries.
How many of them do you still remember?
To say the nationalities, we simply use the country plus person.
The Chinese word for person or people is 人, 人, for example, to say American.
We know America is 美国, we simply use 美国 plus person, 人, then we get 美国人, American.
Now read after me, 美国人, have a listen, 美国人, 美国人, 美国人, now let's say Chinese person.
First, think about how we say China, 中国, to say Chinese person, we simply use 中国 plus person, 人,
then we get 中国人, now repeat after me, 中国人, listen again, 中国人, 中国人, 中国人,
by applying the same structure, we can get the following nationalities.
法国人, French person, 英国人, English person, 德国人, German person, 加拿大人, Canadian person, 意大利人, Italian person, 西班牙人, Spanish person.
Now have a listen to see how many nationalities you can catch.
英国人, 加拿大人, 德国人, 意大利人, 法国人, 西班牙人
To say for example, I'm Chinese or I'm American, you can use 我是, I am, plus your nationality.
Here 是 is a verb which means to be, 是 like I'm is are in English.
To say I'm Chinese person, I will say 我是中国人, if you are American, you can say 我是美国人,
what's more, you can also use 我是 plus your name to introduce yourself.
For example, I am Joyce, so I will say 我是Joyce.
Alright, now can you use 我是 to introduce your nationality?
To ask what's your nationality, we ask 你是哪国人, here 你是 means you are,
the word 哪 is short for 哪个, 哪个 means which, as you know 国 means country,
and 人 means person, so the complete sentence literally means you are which country person.
Now read after me, 你是哪国人? Have a listen.
You can also use this structure to ask the nationality of someone else,
such as Linda 是哪国人, Jack 是哪国人.
Now let's listen to the conversations one more time.
Alright, to recap, today we've learned how to express the nationalities.
Simply use the country plus the person 人, if someone asks you 你是哪国人,
you can use 我是 plus your nationality to introduce yourself.
Thanks to our contributors in today's audio.
In our next lesson, you will learn how to ask specifically like Are you American?
See you next time!
