SpaceX Dragon Ready to RESCUE NASA Astronauts! Boeing Big Lost on Starliner…
After nearly eight months in space, the two astronauts from the Calypso incident are about to return home on the Dragon spacecraft. It will definitely be a shame for Starliner. More seriously, Boeing just officially announced the loss of hundreds of millions on this cursed spacecraft.
Is this time to end Starliner? Why are they in this situation?
Tune in to today’s episode to find out how it happened and learn more about the astronauts’ journey home.
In 2014, NASA awarded Boeing a US$4.2 billion fixed-price contract to develop and operate the Starliner. However, due to delays in the ship's completion and its widely publicized failure, the project resulted in significant financial losses for Boeing. By October 2024, Boeing's effort had exceeded its budget by at least $1.85 billion. Surely, the ship can't drain any more money, right? Well, guess again.

Boeing recently announced it expects to face additional losses related to its CST-100 Starliner commercial crew program when it releases its fourth-quarter financial results next week. In a January 23 press release, the company shared preliminary figures for the fourth quarter of 2024, revealing a projected $1.7 billion in charges across five programs within its Defense, Space, and Security business unit. The majority of these charges will impact two key programs: $800 million for the KC-46A tanker and $500 million for the T-7A trainer aircraft. Especially, for the Starliner program and 2 others, an amount of up to $400 million will be spent. Boeing did not provide further details regarding the anticipated charges. The company is set to release its full fourth-quarter financial results on January 28.

Space Capital, a venture capital firm predicts that both Boeing and Airbus will divest their space divisions by 2025.
Starliner’s failure is not without precedent. Despite receiving NASA funding at the same time, while the smaller-budget Dragon spacecraft successfully carried crews to the space station in 2020, Starliner has been plagued by development delays.
The Disaster Crew Mission was initially slated for 2017, but delays pushed its launch back multiple times. Finally, on June 5, 2024, it successfully launched—only to encounter a critical issue, and we all know how it ended.
