🔥 Rethinking How We Build: A Call for Sustainable Homes in Los Angeles 🔥

Los Angeles has an opportunity to lead the world in sustainable urban design—but to do that, we must rethink how we build. Natural materials like cob are fire-resistant, affordable, and environmentally friendly, offering a powerful alternative to conventional construction.

About the Film:

Evacuated from my home for the second time in a month due to wildfires in Los Angeles, I unexpectedly found myself on top of a mountain, in an off-grid community built entirely with cob. I knew nothing about natural building before this chance meeting—but the more I learned from master builder Betty Seaman, the more I realized how urgent and important her story was to share.

Betty built her cob home as an affordable way to shelter her young family. Through teaching and hosting workshops, she created not just a home but a sustainable community. In this micro-documentary, Betty shares her journey, explains the fundamentals of cob construction vs. adobe, and offers insight into how we can all build more resilient homes.

📢 Want to learn more? Betty is launching an online course later this year! I’ll update this description with the link as soon as it’s live.

🎥 Thank You:

Betty and her family for welcoming us to their beautiful mountaintop home

Nick Scheider for next-level editing

Marysia Miernowska & Ira for bringing me on this eye-opening journey

Zac Smyth and Levi Seaman for the drone footage

I hope this film sparks new ideas and inspires change. Let’s build a better future—one sustainable home at a time.
