But, despite the triumph of catching the Booster 15 upon its return to Starbase, Ship 34 wasn’t as lucky—it exploded nearly nine minutes into flight.
So, what went wrong with Starship? How did SpaceX and Elon Musk explain this Big Problem?

Although the final outcome may not have been entirely favorable, SpaceX successfully caught the Super Heavy booster for the third time during Starship Flight 8, executing a smooth and precise landing. This achievement underscores the company's steady progress in making Starship more reliable than ever before. Perhaps from the next flight onward, we can all be more confident that Booster-related failures are no longer a major concern.
A huge shoutout to all the incredible SpaceX engineers—they have truly turned what once seemed like science fiction into reality!
However, this mission was not without issues. Two booster engines failed after the hot-staging separation.

This is a crucial matter that needs further analysis and careful investigation to ensure the reliability of the booster in future launches. That said, this issue did not significantly impact the overall success of Super Heavy or Booster 15’s flawless catch.
This remarkable feat is a testament to Super Heavy’s robust design. The booster is engineered with engine-out capability, meaning it can lose multiple engines and still complete its mission. History has proven this resilience—Flight 4 suffered engine failures during ascent, but Booster 11 still completed its burn despite flipping into the ocean, and Flight 5 saw Booster 12 successfully caught despite extreme conditions. The landing burn relies on 13 central engines with built-in redundancy—losing two engines does not critically affect the ability to decelerate and align for the catch, especially if the remaining engines compensate by adjusting the throttle or burn duration.
On the ship side, unfortunately, Starship was not as lucky as Booster this time.
