Food Forest vs Traditional Garden: Which one is better?
VOLUSIA COUNTY
If you've dreamed of growing a garden that's inspired by nature - then a food forest might be just what you're looking for. In this video I will discuss main characteristics of a food forest and how it compares to a traditional garden so you can decide which one is right for you.
A food forest mimics nature's design for optimal growth and utilizes permaculture principles to make it happen. That means the food forest doesn't rely on commercially produced potting mixes, mulches, and fertilizers. Instead we work as stewards of the land to ensure that everything that comes out of the soil is put back in, therefore keeping "organic waste" out of the landfill and instead using it to grow food. Food forestry focuses on composting and building soil as much as it does on growing food.
In contrast traditional gardening takes a more controlled approach to growing food. Food is often grown in an organized system and this allows for optimal growth. The biggest benefit of traditional gardening is that you can harvest food in as little as 3 months!
So which approach is right for you?
It all depends on your preference and personality. If you're laid back and prefer to go with nature, then a food forest is gonna be your vibe. However, if you're organized and prefer a structured approach a traditional garden is going to allow you full control.
