A relaxing ride is just what the doctor ordered.. and the local wildlife joined me!
There's a bear on the road
There, ya
Oh, there's a deer there
Oh, so many cows
Oh, I'm really scaring them now
Oh god
They run pretty fast
Oh my god
Well, I've never seen that before
My journey around the planet
begins at North America's most northern
drivable point
The plan is to ride through Canada and America
before crossing over to Europe
From there, I'll make my way
through the Middle East and Asia
After island hopping through Indonesia
it'll be Australia
and finally, New Zealand
The end of my journey will be marked by the
southernmost point of the South Island
I'm calling it the Big Spiral
and this is Act 2
to an Alaskan beginning
Good morning
It's time for another day of
riding motorcycles
I'm feeling refreshed and good
I took yesterday off to do
some work, which I'm not sure
how that all works, but I'm definitely
feeling better. Big ride today
Let's go look at the map
So right now we're in Cunel
and I want to get near
Vanderhoof. So, normally
you take the highway to get
to Prince George, and then you go to
Vanderhoof, but I'm gonna take all these
little roads in here to get
straight to Vanderhoof. So, we'll
just take it step by step
and I'm sure we'll see a lot of amazing
stuff along the way
Alright!
On the road again
So, first thing I gotta
do is get some fuel
It's pretty cool that
the bike has done 470 kilometers
on one tank
and the lights not even on yet
Quite sure it'll
do over 500
but, still
need to get some gas today
It might not sound like a lot to you
like 500 kilometers on a tank
but, motorcycles
are notoriously
they notoriously
have small tanks, so
you kind of
um, you know
if you want to do long distance travel
a tank upgrade
is pretty much mandatory
In North America, you could
probably get away without it, but
already the stuff I've been doing, like
I've not been passing any gas stations
and
the more north you go
the less you'll come across fuel
so
let's see if I can not spill today, cause
it always seems to come
flowing out
and I didn't spill
well, a little bit
but not really
and I got
15.7 liters in, so I still
had like
2.3 liters left
so yeah, I think that would have taken
me over 500 for sure
so yeah, yesterday
I
got a tire pressure gauge
for the bike
actually I should have checked the pressure this morning
but I still
had that wrong size tube
in the back tire
I'm kind of being a bit lazy about that cause I
I'm so sick of taking that
tire off
woah, what is this guy
jeez
trying to kill me
it's a lot of wood
I got a
little pebble on my chest from that
this guy is
hauling, oh my god
just lost my 360 cam
I thought it was
flopping around
oops
where did it go?
oh, it's right up there
I see a dark thing in the road
oh, the lens is still good
yeah, just
I bought this quick release mount
here
and the idea is that
it's easy to take off, but now
the mount did not handle
this
abuse I guess
remove that part I guess
yeah, I was thinking like
it sure is bobbling around
a lot
well
I should pay attention to my surroundings
shouldn't I
yeah, well that should be at least more solid
there's no quick release anymore
oops
just turned it on
hello
sorry about that little camera
ok
let's just put this back in
wow, these mounts
I guess there's just
it's so long that there's a bunch of leverage
on this, this one seems super solid
alright
well
that was a bit of a surprise
oh my god, these trucks
are scary
oh, there's a whole farm
out here
it's like nothing but trees and an old summer farm
and cows
oh, scared him
oh, so many cows
oh, I'm really scaring them now
oh god
they run pretty fast
oh my god
I guess the cows
aren't used to traffic much, cause nobody
comes through here
oh, it's nice
in here
I've got a friend with me
he's trying to fly
Vanderhoof
the geographical center of BC
alright
I got a few things from the grocery store
and
had a little dinner
anyways, heading to
Greer Creek
rec site
for some free camping on the
creek, and it'll kind of
take us into the
the back roads, the kind of
remote, more remote
off the beaten path area
but it's um
what time is it now?
almost 8 o'clock, 7.42
yeah, I'll have a little bit limited
time to set up a tent and stuff, but
should be good
hello
Greer Creek
nice
yeah
well, what a beautiful
relaxing day
I needed that, cause
the last couple days were a little rough
with all those flat tires and
some gnarly bits and
steep hills and
all that stuff
don't get me wrong, I like
that adventure, but nice to
just take it easy and
you know, just
take it all in and just relax a bit
so I really appreciate that
and now I've got this whole, this beautiful
spot to myself
you gotta have a little bit of everything in life, you know
so
well, it's already been a good morning
uh, I just had breakfast
and I just saw a deer
crossing the river, I've never seen that before
anyhow, today we're gonna be
heading to Houston, which is
not Houston, Texas, but Houston, BC
it's one of the little towns on the
Yellowhead Highway, and
uh, yeah, but we're gonna take all back roads
together today, and uh
we'll see what we find, it's just
a really beautiful area, so
should be, should be a nice relaxing
ride, I hope
could somebody
explain
why
flies
go directly
for the ears
as I was like
packing up
the flies, they just wanna go straight for your ear holes
and I don't
know what evolutionary
advantage they stand to gain
from irritating their
target
anyways
um, so, our first stop
today is Chislata
Falls, looks to be a pretty cool
waterfall that's kind of
on my route, so I figured
why not check it out, so
as a mountain biker coming
to motorbikes, oh man, it's
so gravely here too
the one thing that spooks me
is gravel
cause the bike just wants to kinda skate
around on the surface
cause the gravel just kinda
moves under you, right?
and it's pretty disconcerting
uh, so I watched
a couple YouTube videos about this
and uh
what I learned
is that sit forward on the bike
so you get a little more
weight on the front tire
or stand
up
but uh, I'm not very confident
going fast on gravel, like it just
really feels, in fact, I've
had a couple moments where, like
had like a bit of a
tank slapper
kind of
and uh
oh my god, that really scares
the heck out of me
oh, the other thing I learned is
really light on the bars, you know
just let the bike do what it wants to do
don't try to
force it to, you know
I think also this
case I have on the back
cause it really feels like my
the box back there is just like
the tail wagging the dog, you know
it's really just
kinda changing the attitude
of the bike
so, I want to do a test, I just want to take it off
ride that
section I just rode
and see how it feels
cause it really feels
like this thing is going, whoa
you know, so
uh
let's just pop it off
quick, gonna ride that section
again
and then that'll, if it feels
better after that
then that'll be kind of
that'll help me to understand
my issues
but
you know, I don't really have any context
yeah, it's definitely better now
the bikes, um
the spring is definitely
too much preload on it
now, because there's no weight on the back, but
yeah, so the back is
still skipping around
but without that weight there
the bike doesn't want to
shake around so much anymore
but I need that box
I need that
I need the storage it provides
but yeah, the bike feels
a lot better now
oh, there's the box there
look at that
it's a lake
oh, it's a dam
huh, go down here, I guess
nice
alright, let's go for
a bit of a walk
got my walking shoes on
much
much improvement over the
squeaky boots, and it's kinda
nice, I'm the only one here, but I guess it's
Tuesday, so
check out this
snow, the snowmelt must be so
high right now
BC always has the
the sketchiest
hiking trails
it's a beautiful little path, if I do say
so myself
and here
oh, there's a deer there
oh, the way
he bounces, I already thought
cause I was looking at the ground
and I'm like, there's a lot of deer tracks
here, deer season
more, so it's probably the same deer I saw
swimming across the river
this morning, just swam upstream
probably, right? Same deer?
yeah, I hear the falls
it's funny, after the falls
the river calms down quite a bit
wow
that's a lot of water
that waterfall
didn't I expect it
wah, spider
I was expecting, you know, like
you know, just a little
waterfall
that thing was gushing, holy man
but it is pretty hot
right now, and I'm sure the
snowmelt is going off
like crazy, so
just a lot of water right now
alright, just had a
bit of lunch
and uh, it's time
to head north
east
no, north west
I'm not
an expert here
Marilla FSR
alright
I think there's a bear on the road
there, yep
haha
went in there somewhere
just a black bear
they don't do much to you, they're more
they're kind of freaky cats
most of the time
ah, first bear on the trip!
that's cool
oh, and I just saw a bunny or something
so we're heading
to the Francois Lake
ferry
which is kind of cool
it's just this big long lake up there
and there's a ferry that goes across it
and I figured, well, why not
so
I see
a girl in the field
working all day
in the sun
her eyes
are dark as the winter's night
and as bright
as the morning sun
I see
that girl on the train
jumping
every time a whistle blows
clutching
her fingers
to the band
looking pale as an ivory
rose
looking pale as an ivory
rose
oh sister
let's go down
down to that
river there
bathe
in that cool water
forget
about all our
cares
ooo
Alright, change of plans
so instead of Houston
we're gonna head to Smithers
because
hotels are completely
booked up
so I got about an hour and 40 minutes to get there
and, uh, yeah
should be good
music
Alright, we arrived in Smithers
and a lot of progress was made, I'm pretty happy about that
Uh, happy to be
back in the mountains though, that's for sure
Wanna see the hotel room? I'll show you the hotel room
It definitely
has a bit of a smell
in here
I've kinda got used to it already
but it's not great
couple stains on the floor
but, um
yeah, it's alright
Uh, and then
out here, I can see
I can see the bike
down there
next to the sketchy van
but also, I can see
the mountain which is, I believe called
Hudson Bay Mountain
which is a little bit of a confusing name
but anyways, let's go check out the map
and see what progress we made
Alright, so here's our map of British Columbia
and we started
in Cornell
and uh
we did something like
this
it's a little hard to see
went up here
past this Bobtail Lake
um, went up here
something like this to Vanderhoof
and then went down
here
and this is where I spent
the night, so we camped there by the river
saw in the morning, saw the
the deer swimming across the river
and then just went
down here, just a little ways
somewhere around there
saw the massive waterfall
that was pretty cool actually
so then we went across this dam
uh, and then
what did we do? Oh, I think we went
somewhere around here
um
to Utza
Lake, something like that
and then went up here
to the ferry
took the ferry
across
to Burns Lake
and then just now
this evening, I just tore up
the highway
past Houston, Houston BC
not Texas
and then went up to
Smithers
made it pretty far so far
all the way up to Smithers
not too bad, but like I was saying
I'm happy to be in Smithers cause there's
mountains here, and the next ride
is gonna be an epic
I'm really excited for it
I'm not gonna spoil it yet, but
uh, there's a really cool pass
uh, to get a little bit
west of here, I bet if you look
on a few maps you might be able to figure it out
but it's like, I've seen
a couple videos, it's so cool, so
I'm really excited to do that
and uh, I hope to see you
there in the next video, and
also, I should mention this
there's a button on the bottom here
somewhere
if you'd like
ok bye
