Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Immortals in Taoist mythology, is a fascinating figure known for his wisdom, chaos, and supernatural abilities. Born in the 8th century BC, he is said to embody primordial chaos, existing before the creation of the earth. His most iconic feature is his magical white donkey, which he rides backward, allowing him to travel vast distances in an instant. When not in use, he can fold the donkey into a small scrap of paper and store it in his pocket, bringing it back to life with a splash of water.

Zhang Guolao's powers go beyond his donkey. He could make himself invisible and was revered for helping childless couples have children. He is also known for tricking emperors and displaying his magical feats. One famous tale involves him faking his death to avoid being recruited by the Tang Dynasty emperor. In another, he brings a Buddhist back to life after the man reveals his true identity—Zhang Guolao being the incarnation of primordial chaos.

Zhang Guolao also contributed to Taoist practices, particularly in inner alchemy, and wrote influential works on Daoist philosophy. His myth embodies Taoist ideals of balance, immortality, and harmony with nature. Through his legendary actions, Zhang Guolao continues to inspire awe as a symbol of wisdom, mysticism, and the unpredictable nature of the cosmos.
