The Enormous Turnip
Farmer planted turnip seeds.
He watered them every day.
One turnip grew and grew and grew.
Finally, the enormous turnip was ready to eat.
Farmer pulled,
but it didn't move.
Wife called Farmer.
Help me pull this turnip.
His wife pulled, too.
But the turnip didn't move.
A boy with a dog came over.
My dog and I can help, he said.
They all pulled,
But the turnip still didn't move.
Then a cat came along.
Everyone pulled together.
The turnip moved, a little.
Finally, Farmer sighed.
This turnip is too big. I give up.
I can help, said a mouse.
Everyone laughed.
This is an enormous turnip, said Farmer.
You're just a little mouse.
But Farmer let Mouse help.
Ready, said Farmer.
Ready, said everyone.
Together, they pulled.
Suddenly, pop!
Out came the turnip.
Cried Mouse.
We all worked together, said Farmer.
Next year, I'll plant pumpkins.
When it was ready, they decorated its face with candy.
There! The woman smiled.
He almost looks real.
Her husband nodded.
He sure does.
To their surprise, the cookie suddenly jumped up.
He ran out the door.
The couple ran after him.
Come back!
The cookie just laughed and ran faster.
Run, run, as fast as you can.
You can't catch me. I'm the gingerbread man.
Soon, the cookie ran past a dog.
The dog barked.
I'm going to eat you!
The cookie laughed.
Run, run, as fast as you can.
You can't catch me. I'm the gingerbread man.
The dog ran after the cookie, but the cookie ran faster.
Soon, the cookie ran past a child.
The child said,
I'm going to eat you!
The cookie laughed.
Run, run, as fast as you can.
You can't catch me. I'm the gingerbread man.
The child ran after the cookie, but the cookie ran faster.
Soon, the cookie ran past a cow.
The cow mooed.
I'm going to eat you!
The cookie laughed.
Run, run, as fast as you can.
You can't catch me. I'm the gingerbread man.
The cookie ran until he reached a river.
Uh-oh!
He said.
I can't swim!
Do you want to cross the river?
Someone asked.
The cookie spun around.
A fox stood nearby.
Oh, yes!
The gingerbread man said.
Can you help me?
Sure!
The fox said.
Jump on my tail.
I'll take you to the other side.
Great!
The cookie jumped onto the fox's tail.
The fox started across the river.
Hmm.
She said.
The water is getting deep.
Why don't you climb onto my back?
The fox kept swimming.
The water is getting even deeper.
Why don't you climb onto my nose?
Okay.
The cookie said.
Thanks for keeping me so safe.
No problem.
The fox said.
Then she gobbled up the cookie in one bite.
Snap!
At last, everyone reached the river.
The gingerbread man is gone.
The child said sadly.
The husband nodded.
But the wife smiled.
Come home with us.
We'll make another gingerbread man.
So, everyone went home with the husband and wife.
Together, they made another gingerbread man.
And this one was delicious.
Once upon a time, there was a girl named Goldilocks.
Goldilocks loved walking in the woods.
But sometimes, she was not kind to the animals who lived there.
She chased the birds and mice.
She splashed the turtles and fish.
She hid the squirrels' acorns.
One day, Goldilocks was in the woods when she spotted a house.
Goldilocks did not know that the house belonged to three bears.
She opened the door and went inside.
On the table were three bowls of porridge.
I'm hungry.
Goldilocks thought.
She tasted the porridge in the biggest bowl.
Too hot.
Next, she tried the porridge in the medium bowl.
Too cold.
Then she tasted the porridge in the littlest bowl.
Just right.
After eating, Goldilocks went into the living room.
I'll take a rest, she thought.
She sat in the biggest chair.
This chair is too hard.
She tried the next chair.
Too soft.
The smallest chair looked just right.
But when Goldilocks sat in it,
Crash!
The chair broke.
Goldilocks sighed.
I'll just look for a bed, she thought.
Upstairs, Goldilocks found three beds.
The first one was too high.
The second one was too low.
The third one was...
Just right, Goldilocks said happily.
She climbed into the bed and pulled up the covers.
Soon, she was fast asleep.
The three bears were on their way home from the stream.
That was a nice morning walk.
Mama Bear said,
Now it's time for breakfast.
Papa Bear rubbed his belly.
I'm hungry.
Me too, Baby Bear said.
I love porridge.
But when they arrived home, Mama gasped.
Someone tasted my porridge!
Papa growled.
Someone tasted my porridge, too!
Well, someone tasted my porridge and ate it all up, Baby said.
Mama pointed to their chairs.
Someone sat in our chairs!
Look!
Baby sniffed.
My chair is broken!
The three bears hurried upstairs.
Somebody was sleeping in my bed, Papa said.
Somebody was sleeping in my bed, Mama said.
Somebody is sleeping in my bed, Baby cried.
Baby Bear's scream woke up Goldilocks.
Oh, no! she cried.
Bears!
Goldilocks hopped out of bed and raced downstairs.
She ran through the woods as fast as she could.
At last, she was home.
After that, Goldilocks still loved walking in the woods.
But now, she was always kind to the animals.
