Long ago, in the Celestial Realm, there lived Xinyu, the Weaver Girl, a daughter of the mighty
Jade Emperor. With hands as delicate as silk, she wove clouds of dazzling colors,
painting the sky with sunrise and twilight. But despite her divine beauty and talent,
she was lonely, bound by duty to the endless loom of Heaven. Meanwhile, in the mortal world,
there was a humble yet kind-hearted cowherd named Niu Lang. Fate had been cruel to him.
His parents had passed, and he was left with nothing but an old ox and a heart full of dreams.
One evening, as he led his ox through the fields, the beast suddenly spoke.
Master, beyond the hills lies a celestial lake where fairies bathe. There you will find
your destiny. Though astonished, Niu Lang trusted his ox, for it was no ordinary creature.
It was once a heavenly steed, cast down from the heavens. Following its guidance,
Niu Lang arrived at the lake, where seven radiant fairies laughed and danced beneath the moonlight.
Among them was Xinnu, more beautiful than any dream. Her eyes held the depth of the night sky,
and her presence felt like the first breath of spring. Entranced, Niu Lang took a bold step
forward, and as fate would have it, Xinnu met his gaze. In that moment, the heavens and earth
stood still. Love, instant and undeniable, bloomed between them. She chose to stay.
Forsaking her celestial duties, Xinnu descended to the mortal world,
where she and Niu Lang built a life of simple joys. They married, and soon,
laughter echoed through their humble home as they welcomed two children. But happiness is fleeting
when mortals steal from the heavens. The Jade Emperor, enraged by Xinnu's abandonment of her
divine role, commanded heavenly soldiers to bring her back. One fateful day, as Niu Lang returned
home, he found Xinnu being carried away into the sky, her cries reaching his soul like a dagger
to the heart. Desperate, Niu Lang's ox spoke once more,
Use my hide to reach the heavens. Heartbroken, Niu Lang obeyed. With his children in his arms,
he soared toward the sky, chasing the love that had been stolen from him. But just as he reached
out, the Queen Mother of the West swung her jade hairpin, slicing the sky itself. A mighty river
of stars flooded between them, the Milky Way, an unbreakable divide. Niu Lang and Xinnu could only
reach for each other, their fingertips mere inches apart, yet worlds away. Touched by their sorrow,
the Jade Emperor granted a single mercy. Once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar
month, a bridge of magpies would form across the sky, reuniting the lovers for one fleeting night.
And so, even today, when the Qixi Festival arrives, lovers look to the heavens,
knowing that somewhere beyond the stars, two souls find each other once again.
