Breakthrough star Florence Pugh chats about her big celebration plans and the charm of British cinema at the London Evening Standard Film Awards. Report by Nikhita Chulani. Test
How are you going to celebrate tonight?
I'm going to an after party. I don't know where it is, but I have a really swanky driver
that takes me there and then takes me home. So I've already told him and I was like, look,
if I'm really drunk later, and he's like, yeah, and I'm like, can you just forget it?
It's not me, okay? It happens once every now and then.
Yeah, exactly.
And obviously, you know, us Brits, British actors are just incredible. We make amazing
films. What is it about British film that makes it stand out?
You know what, I think the one thing that British film does really well is there is,
as much as we'd like to say, there isn't. There isn't glitz. There isn't glam. It's
just the raw details of how we want to see normal lives be put onto television, onto
screens anywhere. And I think that's the one thing that British TV, British film is
so good at, is taking away the glitzy side of it and just telling whatever we want to
see. And I think that's the competition. There's no faff. It brings it down to raw materials,
raw talent and raw script and raw filmmaking. And that's, I think, how it works, really.
And the proof is in the pudding. There is some great film out there.
But tonight's all about the glitz.
I know, but that's the thing. So tonight is about the glitz, but when it's on camera,
we try and stay away from that and that's, I think, a really lovely thing. And you can
tell. You can tell when you're doing an English production and you can tell when you're doing
an American production and that's the difference.
Obviously, we're coming up to the end of the year. What's been your highlight?
You know what, this is sounding so sissy, but the film that came out this year of mine
was such a surprise, the reaction that we got from it. And it's just been so wonderful
to see it through and it's such a small film and it's done so well. And to be there along
with it all the way is really touching and I think that's my favourite thing. When you
work hard on a film and it comes out in the right way, it's a really good feeling because
it hasn't gone to waste and everybody's hard work hasn't gone to waste. And so, yeah, I'm
chuffed about that.
We'd be very proud. Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Bye.
Oh my god! Sorry!
Zayn's got a great voice.
I'll just leave it at that.
I haven't wanted to meet you. We haven't met each other yet.
Got some lipstick on your teeth.
