Before the floodwaters fully receded in mainland China, the epidemic returned. On August 19, China's National Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention said that the new mutant strain of COVID-19, EG.5, has formed a "dominant epidemic" in most provinces, growing from 0.6% in April to 71.6% in August. Authorities say this trend is likely to continue for some time.
