Pioneering brain surgery ahead for 3News Senior Health Correspondent Monica Robins

In a remarkable development in medical technology, 3News Senior Health Correspondent Monica Robins is preparing for her third brain surgery, this time featuring a groundbreaking new implant specifically designed for her unique case.

The upcoming procedure, while unrelated to her residual brain tumor, aims to address significant complications from previous surgeries.

"There's nothing holding my brain back, so it's essentially pushing my eye out of my head," Robins explained. She will be only the second postoperative patient to receive this innovative implant.

Cleveland Clinic Neurosurgeon Dr. Pablo Recinos, who will perform the surgery, demonstrated the extent of the challenge using computer imaging of Robins' skull.

"You can see the difference in the area that we worked on in the past compared to the normal side," he pointed out, highlighting the extensive removal of the orbital roof and lateral orbital wall during previous procedures. Recinos has preformed Monica's previous surgeries as well.

The current situation is complex: A residual brain tumor remains positioned behind Monica's left eye, affecting her eye socket, cranial bone, and pressing against both her optic nerve and carotid artery. These areas remain too risky to operate on directly without endangering her vision or life.
