I'm making a coffee table for a client and wanted to add a fun original touch to it. The top is made from 5/4 Poplar and the inlays are Ash wood.
I laid out my design first in pencil, in order to make sure all the pieces lined up nicely, I had to cut my grooves in a particular order. To ensure I got clean intersecting pieces, I would cut and inlay all the pieces going in one direction first, before creating the cuts for the pieces that intersected. You could also just cut all the grooves out at once, then cut your inlay strips on the miter saw to fit.

I used a 1/2'' spiral upcut bit to make all the cuts. Set my depth to a 1/4''
