In May 2021, SpaceX landed safely Starship's first prototype, namely SN15. But one of the things that attracted us most was the landing legs that kept the vehicle firmly planted on the ground.
That image is now a relic of the past, replaced by something far more radical: Mechazilla, a system that eliminates the need for legs altogether... or does it?
While Mechazilla might handle Earth landings, the ultimate goal for Starship lies beyond our planet, in the depths of space. So, what happens then?
It is very likely that the legs will return in a new form and we will see them landing on the sea.

It's safe to say that SpaceX Starship is halfway to being fully reusable. Now, the mechazilla system has caught the booster with ease twice, and the remaining challenge lies in catching the ship. Full reusability is a key for SpaceX to make its dreams come true including deep-space exploration and point-to-point travel on Earth. However, the company's ambition doesn't stop at a few Starship flights per year, instead, a lot. For 2025, Musk's goal is to achieve 25 flights, including the flight tests under the Starship Propellant Transfer Demonstration Mission. This is a crucial demonstration for the HLS program (part of Artemis), which heavily relies on orbital refueling in order to get a lunar ship to the moon.

In the coming years, that flight cadence will reach 100 launches per year, resulting in 400 within four years. All of this aligns with an ultimate goal: Mars colonization. Elon Musk's plan involves five uncrewed Starships to Mars to test landing procedures in 2026. If the uncrewed missions are successful, crewed flights, carrying approximately 12 people, could begin in 2028, with goals to "build out and troubleshoot the propellant plant and Mars Base Alpha power system" and establish a "rudimentary base." The company plans to process resources on Mars into fuel for return journeys, and use similar technologies on Earth to create carbon-neutral propellant. The ultimate goal is to transport a million people to Mars using a thousand Starships, establishing a self-sustaining colony by 2050. "Flight rate will grow exponentially from there, with the goal of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years," Elon revealed.
