EXCLUSIVE interview with Frank Lampard after his debut for West Ham as an 81st minute substitute against Coventry on 31 January 1996.
Lampard reveals how he rejected Spurs and Arsenal to join the Hammers, managed by his uncle Harry Redknapp.
I was very nervous obviously but the crowd was buzzing and I just wanted to get on there
and start playing. It's been a long time coming, I've been on the fringe. So I just wanted
to get out there and do a bit. When the goal went in I was a bit disappointed but luckily
we got it back and we won.
It was funny seeing the two number 26's there. You had Gordon Strachan who's just come out
of retirement and the new just starting it.
That's what we were saying as we were just about to go on, he said I'm 17 and he's 37
so it could be my dad really. That's a nice little touch of it wasn't it?
How did you feel? You must have felt awful when the Coventry equalised.
I couldn't believe it. I've actually run over there and I was next to him as he scored
he volleyed it in and I thought it's all going sour. But it was nice when we went up there
I went mad. I was really pleased, it all came out and it was lovely to see the crowd erupt
with the match. It was the best feeling I've ever had.
When did you know you were going to be on the subs bench?
I was in the squad dressing room and I thought there was a chance but Harry came up to me
and whispered in my ear as I was sitting in the changing room about an hour and a half
before the game and said you're going to be a sub. I couldn't really believe it. I was
sitting there shaking for about half an hour but it was nice.
Has your dad said anything to you yet?
He just said well done and he'll have a chat. He'll tell me what I've done wrong when I
come on and when I get home I'll have a thought.
Were you always going to be a West Ham player or were there any other clubs interested in
you?
At the death just before I signed for West Ham I went to Tottenham and made an offer.
I was at Arsenal when I was younger so there was a chance I might go to Tottenham but really
West Ham is in my blood and I was always going to come here I think in the end.
We're really glad you came. Thanks Frank.
Thanks a lot.
