Well, this is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.
We're on the west coast of Scotland in gorgeous Ayrshire
and the setting for the one hundred and fifty second Open Championship
here at Royal Troon.
Look at the first the seal and moving on to the postage stamp.
Well, one of the most iconic holes in golf ranging this week
from one hundred and twenty three to ninety nine yards.
There's the clubhouse in the 18th.
A true test of golf.
If I go full out here, we might you might hear something pop on live television.
So we're going to go.
We're probably going to get one chance of each or three of each.
One chance of each.
That's nowhere close.
Where's my next one?
Yeah, five upwards.
I agree with whatever you want.
We go five hours.
OK. Oh, oh, come on.
Hammered. Yeah.
All right.
Good call.
Iron is the one the postage stamp was not safe.
Royal Troon might not be safe from my defending champion here this week.
Brian, thank you so much for joining. Thanks for having me.
Really appreciate it.
One fifty seven feet apex.
I mean, I think the reason they look down is there's no way they can see the ball.
I wonder how many balls Rory Macca has hit in his lifetime.
We'll probably never know the answer.
I'm sure there's someone clever in there that could maybe work it out roughly.
Yeah, I remember going through with Faldo
and sort of by the time like the 96 Masters was over,
probably thought about two and a half million.
But we used to hit way more balls back then.
I think now and I and I think that a lot of the guys
10 years ago after kind of copying Tiger have almost hit their bodies
into the ground.
And he's Scotty working in these deep bunkers here,
this will be a common common spot for some of these guys.
Oh, it's cold.
So much sand sticking to the golf ball, if you can see that there.
Listen to the impact.
Wow.
That layer of moisture on top of the sand is so difficult to gauge
compared to when it's dry.
These guys can do anything with the golf ball when it's dry and consistent.
Oh, there's a great photo.
I'm going to go photobomb that. Come on.
Wait, one more. One more. Come on.
Come on. One more.
There we go.
All right, we're going to go to a short break.
We'll get a few photos for the gram.
Thanks very much, guys.
Yeah, I actually found my my old course course planner
before coming away.
And there was like, I mean, I was basically marking out spots in the rough
that I knew were OK that I could get.
I could advance the ball from there off the tee.
So that was where I was at then.
But yeah, you know, that was a long time ago.
It's nice to sort of get a look at the course yesterday and
and play. I played nine holes yesterday.
It's a beautiful golf course and a tough test.
So and yeah, I think, you know, I think the standard thing for us,
everybody remembers, you know, Henrik and Phil, you know, shooting that.
But then I think third place was like six under, wasn't it?
Also, I think two under got in the top 10.
It's incredible, isn't it?
I mean, you know, it's just a.
He's the greatest player of certainly my generation.
You know, I didn't grow up watching Jack or, you know,
have that the pleasure of kind of seeing him in his his full pump.
But, you know, for me, Tiger is just
he's one of the very best, one of the very best golfers in the world.
If you are going out to the range and you get to see him,
just to watch him shape the ball around them, hit these different shots.
What do you want? Normal one or higher?
Stinger. I want to see you, Stinger.
I want to see it, mate. You got this.
Yeah, I was about flat like that's going to run forever.
That was just more for hitting it out of the way.
And it's beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
Makes my job easy.
Nice, Padraig.
It makes his job a lot easier, too, if you're cool.
That's not bad technique, though.
What's wrong with that?
Wait for the player to get over the ball.
You lift it up before he gets over the ball.
Lift it up before he gets over the wall.
You were the only person moving when he was over the ball.
Oh, no. So as he's over the ball, you're doing this.
Yeah, that's where it is.
When he when he goes in, takes his practice and keep it up there.
I'm straight.
You can't fail if you're early.
You can only fail if you get out of here.
Get out of here.
Takes a lot of resilience.
Takes, you know, it takes everything.
I think your whole game needs to be pretty good, especially in a course like this.
You know, Royal Troon is probably one of the best layouts
of a golf course you can get with.
You know, it's just the most well-bunkered golf course I've ever played.
And, you know, to win around a venue like this,
you need to be very, very sharp and you need to do everything pretty well.
Oh, that's a long way over the green bar.
There we go.
It's it's the right flight.
I think if we average them all out, it's about one, two, three.
Probably not far off.
James, it was great to hang out with you. Have a great week.
Cheers, Nick. Thank you.
Let's just see if the numbers match up.
Colin doesn't know we're doing this, but it's always just a bit of fun.
Oh, he's going to love it.
That's pretty good. You take that.
You would take that right there.
So you can also see his pelvis sway.
And for I think people at home,
you have to have a little bit of sway in your golf swing.
And minus is going to the right, to the right.
Yeah. For right-handed golfers going back to your right foot.
So he's going to push away from there.
So I go away.
But then quite quickly, I'm already doing what?
Re-centering. Re-centering.
So I went from point nine already back to point five, which is very minimal.
But you can already start to see that there's a shift more towards the left
hand side. There's curve, right?
Yeah. See the curve? Heels pointed left, toes pointed right.
Yeah. For the fans at home, they could see this.
The heels pointed left and the toes pointed right.
If you put just a straight line off of the toe, it'd go right.
Heel, go left.
Center is going to be straight.
So there's what we call a curvature on the face. Yeah.
And so I took that same sort of theory and thought process
because I swing it decently fast.
I applied it to the irons as well.
So it's fractional.
You can't really see it as well.
But that's because it's progressive based on the M.O.I.
of the club, based on the way we how we built it and what ball speeds coming off.
There's a certain curvature for that face that works for my ball speed.
That's pumped.
Do you not get worried the fact that it disappears from sight?
It's sort of 300 yards.
Do you not worry about where it might have gone?
Squinting, I can't see it out there.
It just disappears from sight when you finish one more hit.
Yeah, I'm going to do a good one here.
So I'm going to throw.
So another thing that I do is I try to hit massive draws
when I'm hitting it. Not my best.
So I'll try to swing inside out a lot more.
There we go.
And so it has a bigger draw there. Yeah.
So that's what I'm trying to accomplish when I'm when I'm my most comfortable.
I can do that every single time. Right.
When I get uncomfortable out there, I just go, OK, swing more inside out.
And the club just flows through, turns around the corner, draws.
And it's not like I'm forcing anything.
I'm never forcing. I'm letting passive torque.
Gosh, dang it.
That's such a difficult thing to say to the public
because they don't know.
I don't think they're going to understand what passive torque is.
But what I mean is just be athletic.
I feel like the club's just naturally turning over without you
manually doing anything.
Let the club just flow and close.
You got one day.
Hang on a second, Ricardo.
Hang on. Hang on. Hang on.
Is this the one?
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
Oh, they're tied.
Tied. They are tied.
The dog. Yes.
I got the dog at the 2004 Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills.
I played the junior Ryder Cup that year and I got the dog in the merchandise tent.
And there's been a few iterations of the dog since in the 20 years
that I've had a dog on my on my driver.
But yeah, sort of reminds me of simpler times.
So it's it's nice.
This one has definitely give me tree eyes.
Yeah, he's he's looking a little sad, actually.
He shouldn't be sad because I'm hitting the driver very well.
I think once you get to this stage of the golf tournament,
there's not a lot you can do here on the range that
is going to change things, you know, from now until
you know, I hit my first tee shot in about 24 hours time.
You know, you're not really going to, you know,
the work is done in the previous weeks leading up to up to this week.
So it's really about just getting yourself comfortable on the golf course,
getting your lines off tees, getting comfortable with, you know,
especially on this back nine that I'm going to play today,
getting comfortable with where your misses are going to be,
more so than any anywhere else.
There's certainly better sides to miss it on
because, you know, there's so many tough holes in that back nine.
So just to to get another look at them this morning,
I think it's going to be a good thing.
Beta never stops straight onto the putting green.
And straight to his one handed putting drill,
which he has done for so many years, an old favorite of Tigers
with that Scotty Cameron putter,
which almost has a hole in the middle of the clubface.
You know, these these little signs that the game isn't getting any easier
are sort of starting to approach,
but it doesn't mean that I feel less confident or less motivated these days.
I'm still enjoying it.
And yeah, listen, it's probably a little bit more
gratitude to be in the field, because obviously, you know,
you have 20 years spell where you're in the open,
you kind of beginning of the year, you go, that's my schedule.
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
But these aren't a given.
Do you know what I mean?
You do have to earn your way into them.
And well, that's obviously still part of my goals going forward.
Yeah, it was a bit of a rough one for me.
Qualified for the open last year at Hoylake.
And unfortunately, just a few weeks later, I got diagnosed with leukemia.
So I spent basically the next four months in and out of hospital.
Some big stays and amongst that time and
yeah, lots of chemotherapy.
And thankfully, the RNA were very kind and extended my exemption into this year.
So I'm back to compete.
And this looks like Justin Thomas taking a second ball.
This time, the line looks much better.
Roll on this one.
Well, there we go.
His first effort went miles wide.
His second only about two or three foot away from the hole.
Don't injure yourself, Sander.
Hand speed.
Oh, what a shot.
The athleticism.
It's a special golf course.
I played some of my best golf here.
And even before 2016, I missed a playoff in 2004 to Todd Hamilton and Ernie Els.
I've played well here.
I think it's a golf course that it tests complete aspects of a player's game.
You know, control of the golf ball, short game, putting all the aspects that are important.
But one of the areas that I don't think is as critical here is length or power.
I don't think that it's quite as important.
I think precision is more important.
And so I think that it makes it for a more complete test, I think,
and doesn't isolate who can win by just a few guys who can hit the farthest.
Yeah, swing hard.
But just let's, you're gonna have to shake that off.
Let's get in there.
Bob McIntyre.
Hello.
How are you?
Very good.
How good is it to see all the local fans out for you here this week, mate?
No, it's great.
I mean, last week was special, but this week's nice, obviously, after the result.
Feeling quite at home?
Loving the fans?
Always.
Scottish support.
Gonna beat it.
Yeah, I mean, Ernie's going really well on the seniors tour.
I mean, it'll be absolutely epic to see the big easy come.
Poetry.
The big poetry.
It'll be absolutely poetry.
I do think there is a romance around, and luckily I walked past Rory coming in,
and he loves his rugby as well.
I do think St Andrews two years ago had the makings of a fairy tale.
It didn't come out for Rory, and I think he is searching to close out that Grand Slam,
and I think we'd all love it to see him go out there.
But you look at what Bryson DeChambeau's doing, you know, Scotty Scheffler,
and the manner in which he's just dominating world golf at the moment is brilliant.
So yeah, I think Scotty and Bryson are probably the front runners.
Bryson's coming in with a lot of good form,
and I think it's because he loves rugby so much.
I would love to see Rory go on and do something special.
Let's have a look.
Let's take Tony's wedge shot and just pop it over onto the eighth hole, the postage stamp.
He did make a birdie here in regulation play this morning.
Just a little punch shot.
Does it carry?
Oh, throwing darts.
Yeah.
Tony Fina.
There he is.
And tell me, you've come hot off the press from Wimbledon.
A busy couple of weeks for you.
Yeah, it was good.
Yeah, we benefited from a roof.
I've been trying to say to a few people here at the R&A, maybe build a roof.
You've got to be in front of the track man here.
Come on, you guys have been hanging out here all day.
You should be.
Just coming from lunch.
Bob may have had a couple of whiskeys.
But that's an illegal practice swing.
But full move before he hit it.
Here we go.
Wait, let's have a shout.
Four left.
It looks like the coffin.
Is that in the coffin bunker?
He should get inside 21 feet.
He should.
But, you know, scoreboard pressure runs on the board.
First one's usually a bit chunky.
With a bit pinny.
Oh, it looks great.
Looks like he's going to silence your ball.
Oh, the wind's hit it.
How good is this?
This is proper old fashioned golf scoring, isn't it?
It certainly is.
Thanks to our team from Belmont Academy in the air,
these kids have been up since half past five this morning,
setting up the boards from six o'clock.
And all is done manually by hand.
So we have to start from scratch and we have to get the order of play.
And then when they're all up and running,
we have to then put the scores as they come in live to us.
So they come in live on a handheld machine.
And they're telling us every sort of 10, 15 minutes what the scores are.
And the kids are updating the scores as we go.
Adam Wabi, a disabled golfer.
Mate, can you tell us a little bit about your great story?
Your golf game's thriving and your career's growing.
Yes, I'm Adam Wabi.
I'm 25 years old and I'm a disabled player.
I have cerebral palsy.
My legs basically don't really work as well as everyone else.
But yeah, I'm just a young golfer that's trying to make it.
Don't be standing here at about 270.
These are all of Rory's shots.
OK, here it is.
Here's the fireworks show.
Lots and lots of different shots he played, wasn't it?
Look at that.
It's amazing.
All the curve, the different heights, the different flights.
There's an artist in there, no doubt whatsoever.
How about that?
You're right, we shouldn't be in here.
But look at this.
One of the best corners of all.
The champion's corner.
You have to do something very special to be in here.
Let's go check out who's in here.
And look who it is.
Padraig Harrington taking his shoes off.
Padraig, do you mind if I join you in this lovely little corner of the Open, mate?
It's a pretty special corner of the locker room, isn't it?
How cool is it to be a champion golfer?
Yeah, it is nice.
It's only champions in here.
So when you come in here, you kind of...
And they kind of leave it open so you can look out too
and they can look in and know that you've done it.
Some nice names always beside you in the locker in here.
They even put the British amateur champion up as well.
So that's something special for him.
But while I'm here, I'm beside that chain in the corner.
Justin Zack, Brian Harmon, last year, Todd, Ernie.
So lots of names up there.
So yeah, this is the place you want to be.
