Welcome to Urchinist, where we explore the most inspiring architectural designs from
around the world.
Today, we take you to Thien An, Quang Ngai, Vietnam, to discover a truly unique home that
seamlessly integrates with nature.
Designed by STD Design Consultant, this 92 square meters house is a beautiful example
of sustainable living and architectural harmony with the environment.
At the heart of this home lies a mature Beringtonia Asiatica tree, also known as the fish poison tree.
Unlike traditional designs that remove obstacles, the architects embraced this tree as a central
element of the house.
Its branches extend through an open-air rectangular cutout in the roof, allowing sunlight and
fresh air to flow freely into the living spaces.
This concept embodies a deep respect for nature, a guiding principle in the home's design.
The structure is arranged around a central courtyard garden, which links the living room,
bedrooms, and bathroom, fostering a calm and breathable living environment.
Beyond aesthetics, this house is designed with accessibility and ease of movement in mind.
With a single-story layout, step-free flooring, and wide doorways, it provides a safe and
comfortable space for both elderly residents and young children.
The indoor-outdoor connection is further enhanced by large glass sliding doors, which blur the
boundaries between nature and architecture, bringing in daylight and fresh air while
ensuring continuous airflow.
Sustainability is at the core of this project.
The house utilizes unfinished concrete blocks, a low-impact, eco-friendly material that reduces
the home's carbon footprint while creating a raw, natural aesthetic.
Inside, reclaimed local wood is used for furniture, adding warmth and character to the minimalist design.
By repurposing materials, the home minimizes waste and embraces sustainability without sacrificing comfort.
The home's layout is strategically designed for both privacy and openness.
The main entrance, located along the street, features a recessed glass door behind an unfinished
concrete block wall, offering seclusion while still allowing visibility from inside.
The kitchen and dining areas, positioned near the entrance, create a lively and active space,
maintaining a connection with the outside world.
Meanwhile, the bedrooms and communal areas, facing the courtyard, provide a peaceful retreat,
embracing the essence of tranquility and family bonding.
This home is more than just a residence.
It's a sanctuary that embodies peace, sustainability, and a deep connection to nature.
By preserving the Beringtonia Asiatica tree, using locally sourced materials, and integrating
passive cooling techniques, it stands as a model for environmentally conscious architecture.
Could this be the future of sustainable living in Vietnam?
