Battle of Vaslui, 1475 AD | OTOMAN-MOLDAVİAN WARS DOCUMENTARY. What is the greatest tactical masterpiece of all time where an army being outmanned and outgunned has defeated a far superior opponent? The battle of Vaslui where Moldova led by Stephen III defeated the Ottomans led by Mehmed II seems to be pretty high up there.
Mehmed II is an outstanding sultan who directly led his own ottoman troops to capture Constantinople in 1453, outrightly put an end to the Eastern Roman Empire that existed for over a thousand years. He’s just 21 years old in that historical period and the same age as Alexander the Great when he embarked on the famous Balkan Campaign, the first major military campaign of his life.

Then 1778 years later, Mehmed II is also the sultan who 've taken control of most of the Balkan Peninsula, established Ottoman domination in both Asia Minor and Europe with huge desire of ruling each inch of 2 continents. So he meticulously made a plan step by step, first needs to calm down the restless regions of Wallachia and Moldavia, which are known for their raids into the empire at the first sign of Ottoman weakness, next step is move his armies into Central Europe, in another word: straightly invaded Kingdom of Hungary.
But Moldavia is not easy to address like he thought. Moldavia was seemingly an underdog in European ruling circles when becoming a vassal of Polish in 1451 and began to pay tribute to the ottoman in 1456 until the Stephen III throned in 1457 and turned new leaves for the region: The power of the nobles was reduced, and the serfs, who were once bound to the land, became free tenants. This change allows them to join the army. The military was upgraded with better artillery, and new fortresses were built along the borders to strengthen defenses.
Battle of Vaslui, 1475 AD | OTOMAN-MOLDAVİAN WARS DOCUMENTARY. "Stephen III was a skilled ruler and had as many concerns for his country as Mehmed II did for his own."
He found Moldavia dangerously surrounded by major powers, with Hungary, Poland, the Mongols, and especially the Ottoman Empire all competing to control the invaluable fortified port cities along the trade routes that ran through the Danube Delta and the Black Sea. So instead of prompting the conflict, he wanted peace for his own realm, especially independence.
