Mendelssohn: Wedding March

Although the name sounds like it was written especially for a wedding, the Wedding March was first composed for a stage production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Mendelssohn developed a strong attachment to Britain in the years between revisiting this work and adding the famous Wedding March. After his first visit in 1829, it became a spiritual home where his music was enthusiastically received. He met Queen Victoria and her husband Albert, who, as a fellow German, had a special affinity for the talented young composer.

Consequently, when the Marriage March was added to the earlier Overture, it was first performed at Tiverton, Devon, for the wedding of Dorothy Carew and Tom Daniel in June 1847.

It was not until Queen Victoria chose it for her own wedding in 1858 that it became widely popular. Perhaps fittingly, some of the major cultural influences in Mendelssohn's life were symbolically combined in her marriage to a Prussian prince.
