Hey everyone, so in the last video we got this wall up and we did the wall plate layout
for the trusses.
So now we're actually going to start putting the frame up again and the first thing we're
going to do, how we do this is entirely based on the lifting height we've got our equipment
and how many people we've got at the time.
So I think the safest way we can do it is the way we're going to do it now which is
put two floor timbers up and then try and lean one of these long frames up against them.
That's what we're going to do.
First timber of the high sections.
Hold it there a sec Ben.
That's good.
Right we just need to put a support on that now Ben before we let everything off.
Right, let's do it, up you go mate, and I get up here, down the side there, it's by
the post.
This side here look Ben.
Okay so it's kind of a big day today because we're going to start putting up some tall
timbers and these timbers are a lot bigger or taller than the lifting contraption.
You might think well why didn't I make a bigger lifting contraption, well it's kind of the
longest bits of wood I can use and the longest we can safely do with the tractor.
So yeah we're a bit stuck really so we're going to have to put the posts in individually
and try and hoist them up from about two thirds up them and then we're going to have to put
the floor in above it like we've sort of done there and we've lifted the top plate up there
and we're going to have to lift that in from that top floor later once we've got a whole
section built.
It's the only way I can think to do it safely, yeah there's not really any other option other
than getting a taller lifting equipment.
Yeah right, a little bit of down, hold it, keep a bit of tension, a bit more, there,
a minute, not fighting that, yeah we're good there, Ben if you could put a bit of push
on the bottom, not too much because it'll lever and I'll give it a bit on the top, there
we go, right a bit more on the bottom, yeah yeah yeah that's it.
That is actually it, that's where it wants to be isn't it, that is actually it, up you
go, lift off, that'll do us for now, it was bound to happen at some point wasn't it, forgetting
a brace, I even said to Ben, we've got it right there, I said Ben we don't want to forget
the brace and as soon as you start making progress with something you think keep going
keep going keep going don't you and then, forgot the brace, forgot the brace, yeah stick
that, yeah great, that is safe, that is really safe, give it some tappy tap taps, not on
the chain though, not on the chain, right it's coming together, this next lift is going
to be a pretty big one, it's a big long floor timber and a big long post, so you have to
lift that from around there somewhere on it's balancing point, but if the whole thing is
a big L shape then try and get both braces in, well one brace, that one will already
be in and there's only two of us so it's quite a big lift that, yep stop there, take your
end out that way so we can get the brace in, right where is the brace, it's that one
isn't it, no no I'll be alright, stay there in case you've got to move it out, sawdust,
yep back to me a bit, to me a bit more, there we go, just to hold that, now let's both try
and wiggle that in a little bit, yep, right good morning everyone, we're about to do another
lift, a couple of siders last night, don't feel too great and it's probably the biggest lift,
biggest most awkward lift we've done so far, it's a long floor beam and a long post,
it's all set up, let's see if we can get it in, we've got to slot it on that spline up there
and don't forget the brace, Ben what do you say, don't forget the blue brace, yeah exactly,
all right give her a hoist mate, give her a bit of leg, not too much though, we're almost there now,
yeah that's it, go on then, can't at the minute,
I think I'm gonna have to release the tension to do that, look before I stand on that,
yeah that went didn't it, why is that not coming down then, must be pissed,
there we go,
right we managed to do it, I don't know how much we've got on camera, it all gets a bit
stressful when stuff's not quite lining up, there's a lot of weight dangling, so yeah can't
concentrate on filming sometimes, but it's up there and we're just going to brace it off down
to the ground behind, so there's nothing supporting that at the moment, yeah it's starting to look big
it's funny how much bigger stuff looks when you stand it up, you know it doesn't look that big in
the barn when it's on the ground, you stand it up, starts to look mighty impressive,
do a few kerf cuts on these just because this had a pretty bad
gap on it, yeah I don't believe they were like that when they were done, I think it's just drying,
twisting, shrinking, you know both these timbers lose a couple of millimeters,
which you know they could have by now, you know it doesn't take much to open up a gap,
so
okay I'm gonna come down a little bit, wiggle in a bit,
is that going at all? yeah it's going isn't it, how much do you need to go?
oh really okay, well one hit probably isn't it, ready?
pegable is it? okay one more,
so there we go, that's not too bad going I don't think for two people,
so we put up those two big frames today, just me and Ben today, which makes things a challenge,
certainly with filming as well, but it went well, it's all coming together nicely,
everything's sitting right, you can actually see like the floors are all sitting nice and level,
yeah we just got to figure out how we're going to get that top rail on now,
all right everyone, Sunday morning and we're just starting to put some floor joists up,
I didn't film it this morning because I've never put a joist hanger up in my life,
we don't really want to be putting the floor up at this stage, but we have to because
otherwise we just can't safely get those top wall plates on, so I spent a lot of time checking that
they're all spaced correctly and now we're going to get this floor in, at least floor joists in,
and a temporary floor laid over it so that we can make some contraptions to lift that top plate on,
I did want to actually notch in the floor joists into housings, so we didn't use these ugly joist
hangers, but I decided against it because it was going to remove too much timber out of the main
supporting floor joists and floor timbers, you know every time you go into an old pub and you
see the floor timbers they've usually got a big sag to them, yeah so I didn't want to take anything
out of them, so we've gone with floor joists, but they're going to be covered up top and bottom so
you won't see them, it does feel a bit of a shame to put them in at this stage, but like I say
they'll be covered over eventually, yeah so we're just putting them in, they'll be permanent, then
we'll put some temporary boarding over it and then we'll hopefully be able to get those top
wall plate timbers in, and then that'll settle our gaps and everything and distances and then we can
do another section, do the same thing again. The floor joists I'm using are, obviously I milled
them, but they're 125 by 75 and I worked that out that they're sufficient at 450 centres,
they're sufficient for the loading we've got up there, and also they don't cover up this lower
timber too much, so you can still see that because I didn't want to cover all of that,
that's why I went wider rather than fatter, well fatter rather than wider, yeah get a few more cut
and build a temporary floor and see about getting that on up there, just go straight into that then.
All right I've had a bit of a slow day really today, got a few floor joists up, Ben's gone now
so I think Sam's coming back though, so not on my own too much, and yeah I'm going to carry
those floor joists, finish them tomorrow so we've got a platform to work off, and then I've made
myself a smaller, a gin pole I think you call it, you know micro one of them, and I'm going to put
that up on that floor to lift in that wall plate and get the braces on, because it really needs
them really, because as you can see the wind has picked up, and before I put in a few more braces
like here and all around there, it was actually quite disconcerting being up there, I could feel
screw gun and a screw could you, this one's going to be problematic otherwise,
let's chuck that up first, this one does, yep, got it,
if you can get it just a little bit higher, I'll be able to get it on the balancing point,
then why don't I got it, okay, good morning everyone, so yesterday we got that floor in,
we've put some temporary boarding up there, so we can stand up there, and this morning we've got
set up with our other little lifting frame, and today, pretty big day, lifting that top plate on,
and the brace is quite high up, so yeah, get the drone out and we'll see if we can get them on,
yeah, really nice seeing a bit of a floor going, really changes the feel of it a bit,
stick that in there mate, that side that is,
that's it, some pegs in, yeah to me, there you go, you got it, right that should hold there,
that's it, got it, to me a touch, twist it around a bit, pull your end down a touch,
yeah up a bit, yeah up, right hold it there, up a bit,
right there, I need to try and slide her over a bit,
good, I think you take all the tension off it now,
yeah, so did anyone see on that video there what we forgot,
we forgot to put that brace in, there's so much to think about, let's, yeah,
right so the building was a little bit out of square, obviously where we had to put the floor
before we'd set it square at the top, so I've had to pull it over with the winch,
so we had a bit of a gap, so I pulled the whole thing over with the winch and Sam watched that
gap close up and now he's just driving some pegs home, hopefully that should square everything up
now, hold it there, okay so that was pretty successful all in all, I was hoping to put the
other wall plate on the other side, but I just realized I can't do that until we put another
section in, because the other side wall plate only comes to here with the joinery, so it'd be
floating in mid-air, so we need to put the other section in and do both wall plates at the same
order to do those other top plates, like I said yesterday, we need to get this other frame in,
frame number three, I-I-I, and yeah, so we're going to start by doing this, we've got to lift
the floor timber and this post individually, because they're only on a spline and so it won't
support itself, so we have to put this one in first, prop it up, put the post in underneath it,
under here, and then we can lift the other section as one piece, there's like an L shape,
yeah, you ready Sam?
All right, do you think you can balance that in there while I bring the
post in a bit, there, like that, cool, I'm gonna bring this in to you Sam a bit,
right, it's just we're levering against the top, so drop him down a notch,
let's uh manipulate these a bit while we're doing that,
sufficient for lifting, might leave that on while we lift it if that's right Sam,
another frame going up, yeah go for it Sam, oh actually before we, we've got no access have we,
I can do it off the ladder, all right, up a touch more, all right, okay, bring your foot in a bit,
yeah, that's it, yeah, now down a little touch, just a little bit, that's up, down,
yeah, that's it, hey, that's it, there, there, there, cool, just relax a sec,
let's get the brace in now, can you hold that there a sec mate,
I'm gonna go and shift it over a bit for you,
okay, you ready, yeah, it probably wants a bit of down now does it,
there we go, that's got it in there, cool, that'll be enough that we can manipulate it now I think,
all right, we've got another frame up, so that was just me and Sam, did that in the day,
most of the work's in the preparation, trying to get everything set up right,
it's up there already, so now we are back on to doing another floor,
so I'm off out now because I found someone selling some really cool arched church windows,
I think will work for this, they're a good price, we'll go and get, have a look at them,
and tomorrow we'll plane some more timbers, put in another floor, yeah, and then that'll be us
for this week, and then we have to start again, frames again next week, all right, Friday morning,
and yesterday we got some more joist hangers in for the other side, after putting up that
frame that you saw, we've got three joist hangers to put in that end, and then we'll start putting
up all of those floor joists that we planed on two sides, and table, sword and edge, so they're
ready to go, so it should be a pretty quick job, and then Sam's off home for the weekend, and then
we carry on again next week, it does look nice up here, I do like these curved braces, they came out
I'm in, there we go, good fit, oh there you go, now come down, there we go, that's it,
there we go,
to you a bit, oh there we go, yep, and yep, I am in, I'm in,
I'm in, I'm in,
there we go, I'm in, you come down with me together, I think we'll go, I think we'll get it,
wiggle her down Sam, yeah, keep going, as long as you bring them down even, yeah,
yeah, I'm ready to go, like when I'm slotting, there we go, I'm in,
to you a bit, there we go, to me, there we go, I'm in,
okay, I'm in, there we go, job done, just give you a few extra angles, just to
do the structure justice, it is a beast, it just, it never looked as big when it's on the model,
or on the floor, but it is a very big structure, all right, we'll reconvene next week.
Okay, so that is going to conclude this video, I think you'll agree, it is looking really,
really good, I'd say we're probably about a quarter of the way through, all in all, because
we've still got the trusses, and the wall plates, and everything to put on, so there's still a lot
to do, but it is coming along really well, the technique we're using to do, to put it up, is
working really well, it's working, it's really safe, so yeah, thanks to Ben and Sam for their
help, I couldn't do it without them, because it really is at least a two-person job, yeah,
and so we're going to get the rest of this floor in early next week, we'll start putting on these
wall plates, that need doing up here, that'll tie all this together, and then we'll just keep doing
it on, same thing again, another frame, more floor joists, so on and so on. I hope you enjoyed the
video, and thanks for watching.
