What would you do La La Land if it went on to be a musical stage show?
What kind of scratch are we talking about?
What are we looking at?
Big scratch.
Big scratch?
Yeah.
Front scratch or side scratch?
Back scratch.
Wow.
Back scratch is actually, can be pretty cool.
It's your third movie together now?
At this point you're just carpooling to auditions, is that what's happening?
I think we're ready to see other people.
Yeah.
What about you?
Lion?
Yeah, I'm in.
Back scratch, I'm in.
You had me at back scratch.
Okay.
How was it shooting some of the scenes where you're kind of flirting shamelessly on a succession
of women?
It was embarrassing.
Because they would just sort of, you know, set up the shot and then say go hit on her.
And then it would be totally quiet and I'd have to just go in and start kicking it to
some poor girl.
And in the worst possible way.
Ryan can eat more Twizzlers than anyone you've ever met.
Yeah, the traditional, like, the Twizzler.
And he would keep it in his coat pocket and just, you know, hand out Twizzlers and eat
Twizzlers himself.
That was his move.
And then also it was supposed to be like a loud club, you know, but there's no music
playing on set so you're just yelling at them.
And it just was pretty embarrassing.
Are you a Twizzler eater or a red vine?
Twizzlers?
My God.
Oh, red vines.
We've been asked to improvise a lot in our films.
And I think even in our first audition for Crazy Stupid Love we were asked to improvise.
And I just think improvisation creates a kind of, a different dynamic in a scene than when
you're just reading dialogue.
So, you know, I think that that, in some ways, as we improvised some in this film as well,
it just creates a different kind of connection, you know.
And obviously it's great to work with people you know.
Meltdown.
I mean, I had like a real meltdown.
Yeah, you had to go, you crawled in bed and watched...
Labyrinth.
You were in a house and she was like, I have to go watch Labyrinth.
You can create a relationship.
That's your job, generally.
But it's certainly nice when you have one.
Are you able to look at your performance and appreciate all your hard work?
But I ate proper food.
If I'd done it all on pita butter sandwiches, it would have been a real...
Okay, let's put aside that comedy.
Do you...
Damn!
I think I just got served.
Yeah, he serves it cold.
He serves it ice cold.
Storm clouds may gather and stars may collide.
But I love you till the end of time.
I know the song.
What's the musical?
Could anything improve your dance game?
It's pretty much at the top of the top.
I mean, I do have a little experience in 90s hip hop.
So...
Which I thought would translate into soft shoe, but it doesn't.
It doesn't matter how many times you've thread the needle.
You're not going to be able to shuffle off the buffalo.
What is the theme of this film that you think resonates with people
and has made it such a critical and popular success?
Play popcorn is one word.
So good.
Have you ever been in a bond?
No.
But now I want to be in one, so you'll play my song on the radio too.
People that are not strangers to the whole musical thing like John Legend.
What's that like working with someone like him?
Well, they don't call him a legend for nothing.
It's true.
And the Oscar goes to...
Emma Stone, La La Land.
Emma Stone.
She was previously nominated for her supporting role in Birdman.
