2nd Mongol invasion in Hungary | How Hungary FOUGHT the Mongols with lesson from the first invasion. How did the Hungarian army fight during the Mongol invasion of Europe?
Ironically, the Hungarians were defeated in much the same way they had once defeated Western armies a few hundred years earlier.
9th Century Hungary: The Fearsome Steppe Cavalry
In the 9th century, Hungarian warriors resembled the Mongols in many ways. They relied on swift and agile light cavalry, using the advanced tactics of the steppe to achieve spectacular victories over Western armies. At the time, the knights of the Holy Roman Empire, burdened with heavy armor, were slow and clumsy, completely unable to counter the Hungarians’ speed and maneuverability.

Medieval chronicles even recorded the prayers of priests: Oh Lord, save us from the arrows of the Hungarians!” Tales of these fearsome warriors spread so widely that they were exaggerated into myths of cannibalistic monsters. Interestingly, the French word “ogre” (monster) is believed to have derived from “hongre,” meaning “Hungarian.”
A Turning Point in History
The turning point came in the early 11th century under King Stephen I, who reigned from around 1000 to 1038. When Hungary converted to Catholicism, Stephen aimed to reshape the nation into a Western-style Christian kingdom. He broke almost every long-standing tradition of the nation – from writing to military doctrine.
The swift, lightly armed cavalry of Hungary’s past was replaced with heavily armored knights and infantry, modeled after the Western European armies they had once outclassed.

When the Mongols first invaded Hungary, they brought with them the very tactics that had once made 9th-century Hungary so formidable: swift light cavalry, deadly arrows, and surprise attacks. The Battle of Mohi in 1241 witnessed the complete collapse of the Hungarian army. Under the command of King Béla IV, Hungary’s forces attempted to resist but were quickly crushed. The heavily armored soldiers and rigid strategies of the Hungarian army were no match for the Mongols’ agility, speed, and masterful strategies.
