Deep-seek or deep-fake? President Trump's AI advisor David Sachs told Fox News Tuesday
that the Chinese AI model's success might have come from, quote,
sucking knowledge out of its American rival OpenAI. Take a listen.
Is there IP theft here? Did they steal some of what they were able to scale up here from us? And
do we need to close the doors on what we're doing in terms of invention and technology?
Well, it's possible. There's a technique in AI called distillation, which you're going to hear
a lot about. And it's when one model learns from another model. Effectively, what happens is that
the student model asks the parent model a lot of questions, just like a human would learn.
But AIs can do this, asking millions of questions. And they can essentially
mimic the reasoning process that they learn from the parent model. And they can kind of suck the
knowledge out of the parent model. And there's substantial evidence that what Deep-seek did here
is they distilled the knowledge out of OpenAI's models. And I don't think OpenAI is very happy
about this. One day later, OpenAI said on Wednesday it has evidence the Chinese company
copied its technology by using OpenAI's refined data to train its own data, a shortcut method
that's banned by the U.S. company. OpenAI has asked the U.S. government for help to stop other
AI centers from these unfair practices, including Deep-seek's Chinese developer.
Beyond technology theft, Deep-seek is also accused of posing data security risks to the U.S.
Last Friday, the Navy ordered its personnel not to use Deep-seek, quote, in any capacity,
and citing potential security and ethical concerns associated with the model's origin
and usage. Also on Wednesday, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba announced the latest version of
its AI model, QN2.5 Max. Alibaba claims the model performs better than Deep-seek,
as well as the AI models developed by OpenAI and Meta.
