Josse-François-Joseph Benaut [Benault]
(Gullegem, 30 Setember 1741 - Paris, 13 July 1794)

Flemish organist and composer. Son of the organist Charles Benaut, he initially trained with his father before moving to Paris, where he began working as harpsichord teacher and where in 1771 he married to Aldegonde Lucie Perpétue De Buck (1748-c.1779), the daughter of a flemish merchant. From 1772 he regulary began to write music until at least 1784. In 1776 he created a publishing, publication and subscription business of his works. He also made numerous arrangements of music by other composers and actively worked as a teacher of harpsichord, organ and composition for various religious communities for which he often composed religious music such as masses, motets, psalms and organ pieces. From 1783 he worked at the Hotel de Soubise probably under the protection of the Prince of Soubise. In 1790 he entered Saint-Cyr as a pastor in a church where he established his official residence. However, during the Reign of Terror, he was accused of collaborating with the Vendée rebels and was sentenced to the guillotine, dying executed in July 1794 in Paris. His daughter Marie-Thérèse-Louise Benaut (c.1778-1795) was a pianist and composer.
