This is how the Mongols faced their GREATEST defeat Battle of Bạch Đằng | Mongol invasion of Vietnam. It’s hard not to stop and think, isn’t it? What if history’s greatest empires had taken a moment to glance through the pages of Vietnam’s enduring story? Maybe—just maybe—the cycles of war and devastation could have been avoided. Vietnam’s history has this way of humbling even the mightiest conquerors. Don’t believe me? Just ask the Mongols.
Let’s go back to 1288.
This is how the Mongols faced their GREATEST defeat Battle of Bạch Đằng | Mongol invasion of Vietnam. By this point, the Mongols—yes, the same Mongols who had swept through much of Asia and Europe like an unstoppable storm—had already tried their luck with Vietnam, or Đại Việt as it was known then, twice before. And twice, they had been thwarted. Yet, here they were, launching their third invasion. This time, they were determined to crush Đại Việt once and for all.
They came prepared. 300,000 massive fleets sailed south, each packed with soldiers, supplies, and weapons. Their strategy was meticulous. After studying the land from their earlier attempts, they chose Vạn Kiếp, a strategically vital location, as their base. Sprawling military camps, fortified with tightly packed defenses, surrounded by both land and naval forces. The Mongols transformed Vạn Kiếp into an impenetrable stronghold, combining the strength of their infantry and their formidable navy. Sure, they’d taken some hits during earlier clashes, but their ranks still boasted overwhelming numbers, brimming with confidence and armed to the teeth.
This is how the Mongols faced their GREATEST defeat Battle of Bạch Đằng | Mongol invasion of Vietnam. By now, the Mongols had already seized the capital, Thăng Long (modern-day Hanoi), along with the surrounding provinces. Their forces swept through the land, trying to hunt down the Trần Dynasty court. But Đại Việt wasn’t about to make it easy for them. They stayed a step ahead, vanishing like shadows and popping up where least expected. Rumors swirled—sometimes the king was in Phủ Thiên Trường, other times in Thanh Hóa. To the Mongols, it felt like a frustrating game of cat and mouse.
