7,000-Year-Old Stone Road Discovered Under the Hidden Depths of the Mediterranean

Archaeologists discovered a 7,000-year-old stone road buried beneath sea mud off Croatia’s coast, connecting the sunken Neolithic settlement of Soline to the island of Korčula. Built by the Hvar culture, the 4-meter-wide road was made of stacked stone slabs and dates back to 4,900 BCE, as confirmed by radiocarbon analysis. Protected by the calm Adriatic waters, the site reveals the ingenuity of this ancient civilization. Nearby, a second submerged settlement with similar structures and artifacts, including stone tools and sacrificial fragments, was also found. These discoveries highlight the Hvar culture’s advanced engineering and adaptability during the Neolithic period.
