Nicolas Lancret (1690–1743) was a French Rococo painter, known for his delicate, graceful works that often depicted scenes of mythology, love, and the pleasures of aristocratic life. A contemporary of other notable Rococo artists such as Antoine Watteau and Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Lancret’s paintings are characterized by their light, airy composition, elegant figures, and soft color palette. His work, while in the Rococo tradition, often focused on themes of flirtation, intimacy, and pastoral romance.

Lancret was initially trained under the influential painter Jean-Baptiste-Antoine de Monet, sieur de Latham, and his early works were influenced by the grand style of French Baroque. However, he later became more closely associated with the emerging Rococo movement, which emphasized elegance, charm, and the playful side of life. Like many Rococo artists, Lancret found success painting scenes for aristocratic patrons, including allegories, fêtes galantes (courtly scenes), and mythological subjects.

Lancret's works, such as The Reading Lesson and The Swing, often feature a lighthearted approach to love and flirtation. He was also commissioned to paint works for several royal and noble patrons during his career. Though his reputation has been overshadowed by other Rococo masters, Lancret's paintings remain important examples of the period’s style and sensibility.
