Second practice in Montreal and it was championship leader Max Verstappen
who put in the fastest tour of the Ile de Notre-Dame with a scorching lap time of 1'14.127.
Charles Leclerc was second quickest, less than a tenth of a second back.
After his retirement in Baku, Ferrari have been forced to install a new internal combustion engine,
MGU-H and MGU-K, with the team choosing to fit a used turbo to his car for this session.
But all was not well with the replacement components.
So we will need two burnouts, two burnouts.
What's going on with the... I cannot do burnouts.
It was because of the turbo.
The team confirmed after free practice too he will take a new turbocharger
and thus face a 10 place grid penalty for the Grand Prix.
His teammate Carlos Sainz finished the session in third
and was feeling the full effect of the rugged streets of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
The FIA issued a technical directive to teams ahead of the weekend,
aiming to finally cure the porpoising effect once and for all.
Mercedes changed the floor of Lewis Hamilton's car between first and second practice
as the reigning Constructors' Champions continue to claw their way back to the front of the field.
But the seven-time Montreal winner was only 13th fastest and was not happy.
Kevin Magnussen and Sebastian Vettel had a close call in the pit lane.
That was absolutely crazy.
There's the Martin.
Yeah, copycat, we saw it.
And Lando Norris also had to be quick on the brakes
as Ferrari released Sainz into the path of his former teammate.
The Briton later demonstrating some drifting skills through Turn 6 in his McLaren.
Sergio Perez skipped across Turn 1,
but the Mexican remains on a roll at the moment,
a winner in Monaco and second last time out,
moving him up to second in the standings.
But with his teammate on top,
he'll be disappointed to be only P11 as Friday practice came to a close.
So Verstappen ahead of the two Ferraris,
with two-time Canadian Grand Prix winner Vettel in a fine fourth.
Fernando Alonso fifth ahead of Pierre Gasly,
George Russell, Norris, Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon.
Perez 11th with Lance Stroll, the best of the home drivers in 12th.
Then came Hamilton, Kevin Magnussen, Mick Schumacher,
Joe Guan Yu, Yuki Tsunoda and the two Williams cars.
Alex Albon with the bragging rights over Nicolas Latifi,
while Valtteri Bottas' Alfa Romeo suffered technical problems and failed to set a time.
The usually flying Finn grounded this time out.
