Georg Cantor - Contributions to the Founding of the Theory of Transfinite Numbers - Section 19

5 Video Views·Jan 17, 2025

This video is number nineteen in my series of videos covering the contents of the translations into English of Georg Cantor's famous 1895 and 1897 articles on the theory of aggregates and tranfinite numbers.

This video covers the material from section 19 which expands the arithmetic of ordinal numbers to include all numbers of the second number-class now that the basic operations of addition, multiplication and exponentiation have been fully defined for these numbers. It is shown that all ordinal numbers of the second number-class have a unique normal form which is used to derive many of the arithmetical properties.

This section is one of the longest and most difficult sections of the work. The difficulty stems mostly from the fact that Cantor omits many of the details which lead to the results that he presents. However, once these details have been figured out then the contents of this section become much clearer. This video provides most of these omitted details.
