What do you fear? Is that fear pushing you to make life better, or holding you back? Is it possible that fear is a good thing?
This ADV was filmed in the beautiful San Juan Mountains in Southwest Colorado near Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride. Clips are from Engineer Pass, Imogene Pass, California Pass, Corkscrew Pass, the Million Dollar Highway, and more.
When was the last time you discovered something beautiful?
Or returned to a place that you felt free?
How long has it been since you did something that made you feel alive,
made your heart beat a little faster, opened your eyes a little wider?
Something that gave you a story worth sharing with progeny in 20 or 30 or 40 years?
And now for the hardest question.
What excuses are you making right now to keep those experiences so rare?
Is it money? Transportation? Time?
Are you worried about the worst case scenario?
After all, you might get lost or stuck or hurt.
It is a financial and bodily and socially and perhaps even mortal risk.
That's pretty worst case.
The truth is, there are plenty of things that can go wrong.
There are plenty of excuses not to go.
All of them are driven by one feeling.
Fear.
The prediction of harm.
Behind the conflict of man versus man or nature or society or self,
there is fear.
Fear of an outcome that ends in pain or suffering or defeat or death.
Without fear, there is no conflict, no narrative.
Without fear, nothing is overcome.
Nothing is conquered.
Without fear, there is no epic.
Machines do not fear they are given a task.
They do the task until they are broken or obsolete.
Are you a machine functioning only to eternally succeed at the mundane
until you either break or become obsolete?
Machines leave behind only the goods they produced.
Very useful but rarely noteworthy.
As men, shouldn't we strive to leave behind something more than commodity?
Aren't we meant to fail, to risk, to feel, to overcome fear, to inspire?
Don't let the fear of temporary pain keep you paralyzed in your chair
and your tiny glowing dots.
May the fear of waning time, of life's impermanence,
of fading into irrelevance, of looming death,
push you harder than the fear of pain.
A fear of pain is cowardice.
But a fear of succumbing to death before life is truly lived
is the beginning of greatness.
Perhaps the fear of death isn't a fear at all,
but rather the impetus to actually live.
Many fables start with protagonists stuck in the mundane.
So if your life is little more than mundane right now, that's good.
It means your fable is just beginning.
You have a story to tell and veins that still pump blood and adrenaline.
You have monsters to slay, demons to hunt, people to save.
You have great things left to do.
The world can be far better for your existing than the mere commodity you produce.
So there is likely a calendar on the screen that you're looking into.
I invite you to look at that calendar, find a blank space,
and write in, this is where my adventure begins.
