Because when we put a letter that is not a vowel what we would call a consonant together with a vowel we make a unit of sound called a syllable In Spanish, we use these all the time in order to read and write We've been practicing how to find syllables For example, the word amarillo How many syllables are in the word amarillo? In order to find out, all we have to do is clap Let's try it A-ma-ri-llo We clapped and opened our mouths four times. That means there are four syllables Now, instead of finding syllables we're going to make some Are you ready? ¡Estupendo! Look at this letter over here This is a consonant called M Repeat it M ¡Excellent! If we take M and put it next to one of our vowels A it makes a sound ma Like mamá ¡Muy bien! Now, if we take our consonant M and put it next to our vowel E it makes a sound me like mesa ¡Muy bien! M in our vowel I put them together mi mine ¡Muy bien! M and o mo like mono ¡Estupendo!
