It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold,
This song the earth could will to men, from heaven's all-gracious King.
The wood in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing,
Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurl,
And still their heavenly music blows, for all the weary world.
Above its solemn and lowly plains, they bend on harboring wings,
And ever o'er its baffled sands, the blessed angels sing,
For all the days are hastening on, thy prophet's scene of old,
Where in their ever-circling years, shall come the time foretold,
When they in heaven and earth, shall own the Prince of Peace,
And bow all worlds and back the song, which now the angels sing.
